i dot travel very far so i dont use a ht very often but on the bench as a tool
but was out of town yesterday and again bemoaned the fact that i choose to bring the baofeng
not that the baofeng doesnt function fine as a ht but it is woefully inadequate as a scanner
i have a Alinco dj-560 which is a great radio but has such a limited set of memories that its almost useless
so which of the cheaper dual banders has easy manual as well as chirp programming
and fast scan speed from memories as well as proper scan features?
i am not really brand conscious but i am cheap....

ohh forgot to mention
what ever it is doesnt need any digital or trunking nonsense
we have a statewide P25 system that is used via simulcast only (and probably not changing anytime soon)
and as far as ham digital, its pretty rare around here

A Yaesu ft-60r would fit you bill. Tho programming memory by user input not via software can sometimes be a challenge once you get the hang of it it's easy.

The Yaesu Vx6R scans pretty quick also for conventional scanning. Aircraft and Mil Air as well on AM or FM :). Programming it isn't hard either. 73, n9zas

Yaseu VX8DR 6m/2m/1.25m/70cm and wide band receive (including FM and SW broadcast bands, Aircraft, etc.).
You can set up banks like a scanner, listen to 2 things at once (it has 2 tuners).
Really handy little H/T.

maybe i should just find some one who has a analog handheld scanner that they dont use anymore because they went diggity, there just isnt anything digital around here i need to listen to
this is mainly to take with to car shows and such to find the comms that are being used
and the baofengs and really most transceivers dont scan fast enough to catch things
maybe i need to rethink this.......

For hand held scanners check the classifieds listings right HERE at radio reference. There's several great deals on analog or digital scanners! 73, n9zas

A modern scanner will always outperform a ham radio HT at scanning frequencies. Have you looked at the Uniden BC125AT?

cant be any worse than programming a wangchung errr.. baofeng by hand!

thats 1 vote for the ft-60

Nonsense, Baofeng Uv-B5 is more obvious to program than several other Kenwood, Yaesu, and Alinco radios I've had in the past. Input freq, make menu settings, hit the well-marked write button, pick channel. Some others the buttons aren't as well marked or have odd sequences of things to do between them.

But sure, Baofeng hate is popular.

. Probably because maybe you've never used Commercial public safety grade equipment? Your china grade consumer radios can't compete with Milspec. China needs to stay in china. :). 73, n9zas

Let's stick to the OP's question. This is not the place for Chinese radio bashing.

More nonsense, considering the point was about how easy it is to program baofeng.

I have an Icom ICT70A which doesn't have a very wide receive range, but it has a pretty decent scan speed. It also can run full power from six AA batteries. Good solid feel and great audio.
