The city hired Oliver Associates radio consultants, who identified the frequency range the department should be using as the 450 MHz range. There were supposed to be frequencies in that range available, Hurliman said, but when the city tried to get one, they were gone. "We moved as quickly as we could," he said, "but the state frequency coordinator said they were already not available."

The city currently operates on the 800 MHz frequency, he said, which is less effective than the lower frequency.

The topography is the biggest problem with Shelton. 460 MHz may be better but they have other issues.

Even if they change freqs to 460 they will still have plenty of dead spots. I think the best solution would be adding sites and they could probably do with some new equipment.

They only have two repeater sites, one on Booth Hill Rd in Trumbull and one on Hotchkiss Hose firehouse on David Humphrey Road in Derby. They also have at least one remote receiver on Oronoque Fire House in Stratford. What scientist layed out that setup?

Whoever allowed Shelton to operate like this should be fired and then sued for puting the lives of these folks in jeopardy. Shame on those in charge and in a position to change this for stalling and taking their sweet time addressing this problem. These are officers who put their lives on the line each and every day. What is it going to take, an officer getting hurt, killed? I pray not! THe money has been there for a long time now from the Feds, lets get this done people........

Shelton (WTNH) _ For police officers like John Giordano, nothing is more scary or potentially more dangerous than what he showed us. In location after location around Shelton his radio is unreadable.

"Let's say something was happening and you needed help and explain what's going on. Doesn't sound like they would really be getting it?"
"Probably not," Giordano said.

Officers say the police department's radio system has been a major problem since the day it was first installed nearly 20 years ago.
