I have a Radio Shack DX-394 receiver and it really works great even without any of suggested modifications. With that said I am always looking for something better either portable or desktop (preferred) without breaking the bank ($300). Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

I have a DX-394 also and I ended out upgrading to a Grundig Satellit 800 Millennium. I love the big size of this radio. It is easy and a pleasure to operate. You should be able to pick one up under $300.

Here's some videos of mine in action. 🤙🏻

Something better would be a radio with a waterfall display. Yes, they cost more. Worth every penny. The LAN IQ I use can be used as stand alone or can be connected to a computer. Made in Israel. I use an external usb battery when used as a stand alone setup.

I have sent my DX-394 out for modification and anxious to get it back later this week and see the difference. In the meantime I picked up anew Eton Elite executive on eBay for $45 just to have a radio to use while my 394 was getting worked on. I was surprised how good it was. Can’t wait for the 394 to come

The DX-394 was a fairly good receiver and was very sensitive, even on the AM broadcast band. Are the mods related to the filters? The most common complaints seem to be about its selectivity.

I only did the RF modifications to my DX394 and none of the audio ones as I don't listen to music or other broadcast transmissions. I had the DX394 and a Icom R75 connected to the same antennas using a splitter and sometimes the R75 received a signal better and at other times the 394 had a more clear signal. Maybe it was lack of selectivity that made the 394 work better if there where no interfering adjacent channels but in a crowded band the R75 might do better but I never though of that, they just performed differently but the R75s reception where not superior in any way to the DX394. But of course the many features of the R75 made it much better to use.

But having a spectrum display from a SDR dongle makes that much better as you instantly can see where a transmission are taking place and don't have to blindly tune a VFO over the band to find active transmissions. You can usually also save a whole frequency band to a file and then play back and tune in to stations that you missed.

For a desktop I recommend the AirSpy HF+Discovery. You'll need a computer to run it though and the free software. As a SWL for over six decades this is one great performer. There's a bit of a learning curve but it had a nice spectral display plus a waterfall.
