Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I know officially it says that the E5 control head is compatible with the APX6500 and APX8500, but has anyone tried it or does anyone know if it will in fact work on a 4500? Thinking of getting one for an APX4500 dash mount radio, but only if it will actually work obviously.

The E5 appears in CPS as a control head option for the 4500. Whether or not it actually works is another story. This is MSI we're talking about, after all.

Yes, I saw that too. I know M says certain devices/equipment are only compatible with listed devices, but we all know that to be incorrect.

The 05 head was never a standard option on the 4500's. It was a hidden option. If E5 isn't listed as an option, it's likely the same.

You used the E5 with the 4500?
Yes. They were purchased/shipped new with these (E5) heads (Price pages do not show it as available.) BUT we worked with our directly rep and he made it happen. (We wanted same heads as our APX6500 Dual Head rigs. For consistent user radio training)

Understand, these are APX4500 "B" version (Enhanced) To the best of my knowledge, "A" version is a no go for E5.

You can confirm it works with the 5000? Cause a 110 watt XLT 5000 is half the price of the 110 watt APX 6500. I just picked up a brand new E5 head on Ebay for a decent price. Motorola wanted $1500 for a new head.

I'd be interested to know this myself. At my previous job, one of our customers was the local transit authority, which had a whole mess of XTL2500 and 5000 mobiles in their buses (a couple hundred at least). They used a custom control head that worked with their CAD/AVL system and replaced the original control head. After they started buying APX6500 mobiles, they discovered that their control heads wouldn't work because the control head communication protocol differed from the XTL radios. The CAD/AVL company ended up having to update their software to accommodate the new radios.

And like @ChristianPeri26, I'd love to be able to use an E5 head with the XTL5000 brick I have sitting in the garage.
