Thanks for sharing this Rich. For about 10 years I attended Oshkosh in support of the Disabled American Veterans' outreach efforts. I cannot describe how cool it was to monitor ATC while nearly 10,000 planes landed over the course of a weekend. At any given time three planes were landing simultaneously on two runways and the communication with ATC was unidirectional. The controller would say something like "blue high winged tail dragger, please rock your wings" and when the aircraft did so the controller would say "land on the yellow dot." And almost without exception the controller would end with "welcome to Oshkosh!" Their enthusiasm was obvious. One memorable landing was a small jet with the tail number N1. I knew that was someone important.
