New SDS 100 owner. So I watched a youtube vid on how to add freqs manually. So i live in El Cajon Cal and just wanted to do the police as a favorite. Now when I was a Pro96 dude, I used win96 to add control freqs and the DEC for certain channels. So I added manually the control freqs and a few talk freqs. I want to look at the list and see what i might have missed. Am I making sense?

Any comments folks?

Thanks

Jump over to Youtube and look at Uniden's video on how to create a Favorites List if you haven't already.

To see what you already have, connect scanner to Sentinel and read from Scanner.

I have to ask.....
Why add freqs manually?
Or, are you adding new freqs (not in Sentinel) to an existing favorite list?
(If a new list, just do it via Sentinel, if everything you need is in the database)

Well its a learning curve right now. With the PRO 96 and Win96 it was easy and neat to add the stuff I want to listen to. The SDS 100 is complicated. It'll take awhile to figure out. I did the easy thing, the zip code download, and then i went in and block stuff like railroads and buses, etc. I want to focus on my part of town only and watching a YT last evening was informational except when the dude with a scanner started talking about filters and shi* and I couldnt find that. So I got a fave lists going and it's not working to my expectations. With the win96, you just put in the control channel and the DECs and it worked great . Dude with a scanner wanted all Control Freqs put in, including backup ones. and ALL the talk group freqs. Ridiculouos. I did what i saw. and i'm not getting hardly any;thing. Right now, I want to wipe it clean and start over. I cant figure out how to block the whole database from loading. I'm gonna try the Sentinel and see what i can accomplish with that.

Yeah the scanner is complicated. That's because radio systems are more complicated. I feel the same way about my new smart TV that is really dumb. All those apps, channels, this input and that input. Sheesh. And don't get me started on smart phones. What's wrong with wireline phones?

Favorites Lists take time and patience to perfect. You try something and see how it goes. Then you tweak it as necessary. You are just now starting to learn, it takes everyone time to learn these things and we've been frustrated too.

You really do want all the frequencies because control channels can change. Doing that does not slow down your scanning, unless you are reaching out too far to monitor distant sites.

The easiest way, but not the official way, I remember to turn off the full database is to re-enter my zip code. Then when asked to turn on the full database, I answer no.

Sentinel will be your friend. You can make your Favorites Lists a lot more favorable with its use.

Let Sentinel do the work for you. First, use Sentinel to READ FROM scanner. Then go through the favorites list and just DELETE
anything you do not want. (The big RED X). Don't worry about locking it out - just delete it altogether. Clean out all the "garbage" you do not
want in your favorites lists.

The only control channels you "need" are the ones listed in red in Radio Reference. Those are the primary control channels.
You "should", but you do not have to, put the control channels in blue type in as well, because these are the alternate or "backup"
control channels if one of the red ones goes down. You can ignore the channels in black type completely. The scanner will
know which of those to tune to by reading the control channel. The black ones do not have to be entered.

After you get all done be sure to WRITE TO SCANNER so the changes you made with Sentinel will get loaded onto the
SD memory card of the scanner.

FILTERS - Honestly? I don't think ANYONE really knows or can explain how these work and which one to use!
It is done by trial and error. Use the filter that works BEST for your situation. But be aware that what works right
now may not work if you move the scanner to a different location. Personally, I have not seen that much difference
between one filter and the next. Filters were "added" after the scanners were sent to market, thus there is nothing
in the manual about them and the "Easier To Read" manual avoids the issue for now! Good luck, but most of all
do not get discouraged. There are many ways to accomplish things with this scanner and part of the fun is to
"learn by doing"!

Yeah I did watch the vid where the person stated click on READ FROM SCANNER

Last but not least, note the person above you sez to *ADD* everything whereas you state you only need the red control channels

Thanks for your input

I do not agree with the above. Systems change control channels sometimes and if you don't have the others in there (especially the 'blue' ones), you will hear zip, nada, nothing... You have a 100, it will find and use just the ACTIVE control channel, ignoring the rest. There is no downside to having them all in there.

Do. Not. Delete. Use AVOID instead.
This has been discussed exhaustedly, yet people still suggest it.
