• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have recently acquired a 5100 VHF model-3 with FPP. I have the software but cannot get this thing to read. I using a serial cable (yes the com is set to com-1) but am wondering if a USB cable might be better. I can actually do quite a bit using the FPP, but cannot change a channel to digitial P25 like I can with my XTS5000 with FPP.

Can that be done via FPP or do I need to do it through the software?

Any advice on read/write for this radio? I am very proficient with most Kenwood/Motorola/Vertex programming but this one is giving me a fit.

Are you using the right cable? I know moto cables look the same and fit but they're not the same.

EFJ's are pretty particular about what SW version works with what Firmware.

Whats your Firmware version?

Correct cable yes

I do have the correct cable, but am not sure about the software version or firmware version. So is there a chart or page somewhere that shows what goes with what?? Thanks again

Also you may have to play with the baud rate when reading the radio and also make sure the software is booted fully before hooking up the radio to be read

Most of the Johnson radios don't like to be programmed with a fast clock speed computer. I have run into this many times. So I keep a slower laptop computer around just to program the 5100 and 5300 radios.

You might also have an issue with the version of the software your using. The EFJ 5100 and 5300 radios have a multitude of different versions of the software. It sort of depends on where the radios were made (MN. or TX.) and what firmware is in them. When you first turn the radio on, you will notice that there will be 2 sets of numbers that very briefly display on the radio. You need to try and write those down and those numbers will define just which version of the software you need.

I don't have a chart to look them up on, but there use to be a web site for EFJ radios. One of the members on there would help people determine which version of the software they needed. Getting a copy of the required version software was the next problem.
