Governor Schwarzenegger Issues Statement on Death of Caltrans Worker Matthew White
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today released the following statement regarding the death of Caltrans worker Matthew White of Sacramento, CA:
"Maria and I are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Caltrans employee Matthew White. Every day on the job, he brought great dedication and commitment and we are forever grateful for his service to the people of California. Our prayers are with Matthew's family during this painful time and we join all Californians in praying for their comfort."
White, 35, died December 14 as a result of injuries sustained from a car accident that occurred in his work zone on the southbound Elk Grove Boulevard off-ramp on Interstate 5. He has 5 years of service with Caltrans in the Sutter-Sierra Region and was most recently serving as a highway maintenance worker in the Elk Grove maintenance yard.
Nationally, three workers die in cone zones every five days, according to the Federal Highway Administration. 170 Caltrans employees have been killed in the line of duty since 1924.
In honor of White, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.
