He is a five year veteran of CalTrans. He was working out of the Elk Grove Yard at the time, he usually works out of the Auburn office. He lives in Sacramento though. He was working on SB- I5 at the Elk Grove blvd exit filling pot holes with a crew. This is the third CalTrans worker killed this year in California. The first since 2001 in Sacramento when a worker had a heart attack on the Cap City Freeway.

I heard the call for vehicle vs ped on I5, wondering what a ped was doing on the freeway. Thank you for the update!

I've noticed an increase in vehicle vs ped and auto vs bicycles in the past couple of years. I wonder if the statistics show this or if it is just me. It also makes me wonder what the underlying cause was/is, such as in this case. Are we talking drivers that just don't care, are texting, a situation of bad timing, or? Perhaps you could suggest a follow-up story on this sub-topic.

Thanks,
George

We are talking about that right now. David was on a good story before going to the crash so we need to decide if he goes back to the other story or we fallow the auto ped stuff. Either way its worth something even if not done today.

EDIT

David will stay on the auto ped, he has the above info to look into.

As for the drivers that cause these types of incidents, I would say many do not care, are too busy text messaging, talking on the cell phone, are in a hurry, speeding & tailgating or doing other idiotic things instead of paying attention to the road.

Just this morning a driver was reading a paperback book while driving 70 mph on Highway 50 near Zinfandel. Same location a few weeks back a woman applying mascara while exiting the freeway. The same goes on the side streets as well.

Governor Schwarzenegger Issues Statement on Death of Caltrans Worker Matthew White

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today released the following statement regarding the death of Caltrans worker Matthew White of Sacramento, CA:

"Maria and I are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Caltrans employee Matthew White. Every day on the job, he brought great dedication and commitment and we are forever grateful for his service to the people of California. Our prayers are with Matthew's family during this painful time and we join all Californians in praying for their comfort."

White, 35, died December 14 as a result of injuries sustained from a car accident that occurred in his work zone on the southbound Elk Grove Boulevard off-ramp on Interstate 5. He has 5 years of service with Caltrans in the Sutter-Sierra Region and was most recently serving as a highway maintenance worker in the Elk Grove maintenance yard.

Nationally, three workers die in cone zones every five days, according to the Federal Highway Administration. 170 Caltrans employees have been killed in the line of duty since 1924.

In honor of White, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.
