Anyone know what the law is as far as emergency lights on volunteer fireman person vehicle. What colors can be used/can't be used. Front and back? Am considering getting some strobes for my headlights/taillights. Thanks for any information you can provide.

And, your Chief also has to give permission. From South Dakota statutes:

32-17-42. Blue lights or strobe lights on firemen's vehicles--Authorization for installation-- Restrictions on use--Violation as misdemeanor. Any motor vehicle operated by a member of an organized fire department or organized search and rescue unit may be equipped with flashing blue lights displayed to the front or a blue rotating beacon light or strobe light or both to be visible 360 degrees. This provision does not relieve the driver of such a vehicle from the duty to drive with due regard for the safety of all persons using the street nor does it protect the driver of any such vehicle from the consequence of a reckless disregard of the safety of others.

No person may use a light described in this section except a fireman or search and rescue unit member while actually en route to the scene of a fire or other emergency requiring his services as a fireman or search and rescue unit member, who has been authorized in writing to so use a blue light. Such authorization shall be given by the chief of the fire department or coordinator of the search and rescue unit only to members of the department who are in good standing.

A violation of this section is a Class 2 misdemeanor.

32-17-9. Red lights on front of vehicle prohibited--Excepted vehicles--Misdemeanor. Except for any authorized emergency vehicle as defined by § 32-14-1, any person who drives or moves any vehicle upon a highway with any red light thereon visible from directly in front thereof, is guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor.

32-14-1. Definitions. Terms used in chapters 32-14 to 32-19, inclusive, 32-12 and 32-22 to 32-34, inclusive, mean:

(2) "Authorized emergency vehicle," a vehicle of a fire department, a police vehicle, an ambulance or emergency vehicle of a municipal department or public service corporation that is designated or authorized by the department, and an emergency vehicle titled to a local organization for emergency management created pursuant to chapter 33-15;

blue

You can only have a blue light. visible from all directions. See above laws. Hate to see in the clinger. I will

You will have to fill out a form. Your chief has that for you to fill out.

Stay safe.

SD Firefighters get blue. Because white is also relatively uncontrolled you can get by in nearly all of the state running white and blue. Also amber is a free color to any vehicle but I prefer a white and blue front with a blue and amber rear setup. Ask your chief, and you dont have to worry about any of it, as they will know what your cops are touchy about, but like I said you most deffinetly get blue.
