Can anyone help with an explanation? I saw a great description for the CTAS levels several years ago but alas, I cannot find it now and could use the refresher.

Thanks.

Thank you for the info. Even more informative than the other explanation I'd seen previously.

The above is the tool used in ER departments, can't speak exactly for EMS. All ambulances are Re-Triaged by the recieveng facility Triage Nurse. Although most Emergency Services Personell agree with the CTAS system, the timelines are not always met. The rule of hand is also that if in doubt/unable to properly assess the situation to triage as a higher priority.

A CTAS Level is often part of the EMS patch, along with other crucial information. This allows the Triage Nurse and other Emergency Department staff the opportunity to prepare for the incoming Life Threatening Emergencies. Often there is specialized equipment and areas that can be prepared prior to the arrival of EMS to better provide care for the patient

Additionally (my understanding anyways) is that CTAS Level 1 & 2 patients generally go to the closest hospital regardless of its status as they are the most critical. Mostly this impacts Toronto EMS considering the new Destination Selection Decision Support Software.

For further info on Destination Selection Decision Support Software used by TO EMS please see...
