How often does the End-of-Train Device transmit? Is it continuous and/or how does it become active? I see them attached but can never seem to hear the telemetry. Is it audible data 'hash'? I've been listening on all standard rail frequencies/channels, with priority on 452.9375/457.9375 MHz.

Cool... The article also says that some ETD's are just "dumb" devices that only start to flash when it gets dark out... ...No telemetry, I'm wondering if that's the issue.

Thanks for the link.

wbigcount, if you're asking me, then BNSF in CO. There are a couple UP switchers in the yard, but they use their cabooses, so that answers it's own question :)

ATCS,however,is not used everywhere so be sure you check the map on the ATCS mon page before you go setting up shop for ATCS.

Since there is an EOT thread, FRED saved my life today.

We got train control and went to suppression. Nothing happened. Train Control popped the PCS valve. Nothing Happened. Engineer pushed the automatic handle into emergency. Nothing Happened. I grabbed the Conductors emergency valve. Nothing happened.

No air was coming off of the rear of the train. It still showed 87psi. We flipped the rear emergency switch and came to a screeching halt.

Turns out a loose angle **** managed to get itsself closed 12 from the headend of my 135 car loaded coal train. This means I had 12 brakes trying to hold back 18,000 tons of train.

Thank god for 2 way End Of Train devices.

There is a decoder program out there on the web floating around that will decode the raw data bursts for you, I gave it a try last year and it worked like a charm, I think I had it connected to the discrominator tap on my scanner.

That might help but the only prob then would be trying to wake the conductor up to pull the red handle.
