• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

    If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

    To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello everyone,

I am hoping someone here can help me in heading in the right direction for a project that I have. The police department I work for is moving to a new building and I would like to hook up our current PD radio (TK-980) to multiple external speakers placed in different offices and the locker rooms.

What would be the correct way to do this?

Thanks,

You will need to use a PA system, too many speakers on the radio will drop the impedance and not sound right or pop the audio amp in the radio.

@kd4efm,

Thanks for the quick reply. Is there a PA system compatible you would recommend?

Lol, radio shack, if they are still around , just need something to take 4 ohm in and pass it out on say 6 - 8 speakers. Don't need anything fancy. Just a simple PA system.

You would look for a fixed audio out of your radio, NOT speaker, and that would be line level. That feeds to the building PA amplifier on a Line input.

You'll need a KCT-19 accessory cable for this radio. That will give you the pinouts you need to get a low level audio output that can be used for feeding a line level input on an amplifier.
Specifically, Pins 4 & 6 on that connector are what you'll need.

Alternatively, you can give one of these a try: STP-1 ‐ Universal Audio Attenuator - 2 channel If I recall correctly, those will handle the low level external speaker output off the 1/8" jack on the back of the radio and let you connect to the line level input of the amplifier.

The same company has some nice small amplifiers for this sort of application. http://www.rdlnet.com/subcategory_products.php?cat=4&subcat=11
