Greetings to all,

Anybody else here in Churchill County, Nevada? I've dusted off my old scanner and can monitor the Churchill County Sheriff's Office, but Fallon PD is a no go. Their old freqs are dead and according to the RR database, their dispatch is P25 narrow band encrypted. Can anybody confirm this (the encryption)? If there was a chance to listen to them I'd get a narrowband & digital compatible scanner, but not if there is nothing to hear.

I've also got a list of the freqs used by Naval Air Station (NAS) Fallon for their bombing ranges (including Desert Control). If anybody is interested I can post them here.

Thanks!

NAS Fallon P25

Curious is there a P25 phase 1 for the flightline and support activity on the base? I understand if security was encrypted but down here at Nellis the flightline is in the clear phase 1. Try looking at p25 in the 400 - 410 mhtz area. Try to find new sites and post the nac codes.

Unfortunately encryption is a sign of the times and not your fault... From my experience of listening to scanners years ago I think its a safe bet that the vast majority of their comms are very routine, so its too bad they did not just leave them in the clear.

I also recall listening to a sheriff's office (a long time back in another state) that used voice inversion for their encryption and only used it when discussing something extra sensitive. Otherwise everything else was in the clear. I never bothered to do it but I remember friends telling me back then that one could buy a decoder that would allow someone to listen in to the descrambled traffic.

Is such a thing possible (interception) with P25 encryption, or even legal? I wonder.

Meanwhile, I can still pick-up the Churchill County Sheriffs in the clear now on 155.190. It also sounds like EMS is on the same frequency. Fire is also still in the clear on 155.055. Hope it stays that way but only a matter of time I guess, until it all goes away. :(

Thanks for the info.

I'm not sure about your question but I'll try to find out. I am dealing with a learning curve since I have not listened to scanners for years, and a lot of this stuff is new to me (I know what P25 is though). My scanner is also ancient, a RS Pro-2032 that is at least 20 years old. Does not support trunking and is analog only.

I'm mulling over whether to buy a narrow band digital scanner with a greater frequency range but if all the law enforcement out here goes encrypted then I don't know if its worth it.

If anybody has any thoughts on this please leave a comment. Thanks.

Don't get rid of that scanner

You could have a digital scanner by doing this PRO-2022/2032 there is an easy free program to install called dsd plus. It uses that tapped signal via your soundcard line input. Very cheap to do and might help you decide if you really want a digital scanner? Once installed all you have to do is tune to one of the 400-410 mhz freqs (not the control channel) and you'll hear digital comms.
