There was some channel re-naming back at the federal level a while back. FERN-1 is now VFIRE-21 (154.28 I believe). Some agencies path it to their trunked systems but no guarantee the patch will always be active.

I'm sure you can find the other conventional mutual aid VFIRE, 8-TAC-##, etc freqs on this site somewhere in the nationwide section.

As Steve said, the FERN (Fire Emergency Radio Network) frequencies were renamed to VFIRE when they were narrowbanded. FERN was supposed to refer to that frequency being used in the old wideband mode while VFIRE is for the narrowband mode. Since VHF was supposed to be narrowbanded at the start of 2013, FERN is no longer a proper name for those set of frequencies. A number of agencies that don't routinely use or train with them still call them FERN out of habit.

FERN 1/VFIRE 21 - 154.280 MHz
FERN 2/VFIRE 23 - 154.295 MHz
FERN 3/VFIRE 22 - 154.265 MHz

When someone says "FERN" without a number, it usually refers to FERN 1.

As for the national conventional frequencies: Interoperability Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference

When I lived here in the 90s, I think each FERN channel has a color name as well.

Yesterday was the first time I had heard anyone mention any FERN channel usage since I have been back.

Thanks.

The Denver Metro Area also uses NetworkFirst channels:
Red NW
Red NE
Red SE
Red SW

Your best shot of getting these will be on either the DTRS, MARC, or Denver EDACS systems. These are mainly common talkgroups between all the metro area trunking systems.

On V-FIRE 21 I regularly hear Flight For Life Dispatch (at St. A's) talking with various other dispatch centers, presumably those with base stations close enough to hit the St. A's base station. Just this evening I heard FFL Dispatch talking with Jeffco Disaptch. I also recently heard them talking with Aurora Dispatch on V-FIRE 21. Numerous dispatch centers/agencies in the Denver-Metro area still have active base stations for V-FIRE 21, so it's definitely a good channel to monitor.
