Ferriday City Hall (Concordia Parish) has come under fire from residents and others who motor through this town of less than 5,000 residents. The town is also drawing national attention. The issue is hundreds of thousand of dollars in speeding tickets already paid and another $600,000 worth included in this year's town budget projections. That's enough to add the town of Ferriday to the National Registry of Speedtraps. The National Motorist Association internet website describes Ferriday as a "small town with primary source of income created by traffic fines." Telling travelers to "beware", the NMA asserts that, "most any non-local is a target, with out-of-state vehicles considered easy pickin's." The towns mayor, Gene Allen, who also presides over the traffic court, says the enforcement campaign is not a matter of revenue generation but rather a matter of safety. (Yeah, right) But, he admits the $400,000 in fines he says have already been collected helps the town pay its bills. With the $400,000 already collected and $600,000 more projected by year's end......that is $1,000,000 from speeding tickets alone! The average speeding ticket is what $50 to $150? How many of those add up to $1,000,000?
Watch out if you go through this little town and keep your scanner on 155.6550 to listen for the Ferriday Police. Just in case the Concordia Sheriff is helping out, they operate on 155.5650.
