XYL made me go out and buy a Roll-Top desk, and these pictures were taken for Insurance Company (HRIA), but before I clutter it up again, thought I'd share it. :))

I spot me a nice variety of radios. Icom IC-735 and a Yeasu FT-100, and above that the Kenwood TM-D700. Got plenty of Yaesu HT's too. That's a nice setup you have. I have some of those same radios. Like the VX1R, and the FT-100D.

Cleaned-up mess.. :)

Thanks for the kudos, but the XYL's the instigator! :)

Got many more Scanners and equipment tucked away and the PC under the desk, but seeing as it is in the Bedroom, rolling down the front makes it more palatable to XYL as seen. :)

A few more pix attached - the G5RV at 50' , the Scanner grouping at 60' and my Mobile with ATAS-100 on roof and FT100D inside..

Also my personal logo :)

RF cable tucked into the Glass jar
Ahh... the old "RF cable tucked into the Glass jar" trick!

I haven't got a clue, but I'm sure it'll be educational...

Mine too. My shack is in the bedroom also so I have an armoire with every thing installed in it. That way I can shut it up when not in use and she can't see any radios cluttering up the bedroom.

Glass Jar for minimizing Lightning flashover..

Well, don't know about educational, but I was reflecting on an earlier thread on one of the RR forums where the "dangers of exploding glass jars" was a hot topic, complete with suggestions to wrap the Jar in Duct tape, Fiberglass, etc, etc. :)

That one cable runs to the Discone and when the the rumbles get too close, i casually park the end of the cable in the Pickle Jar.. :)

I must be clueless but I have to ask why would you put the cable into the glass jar?

supposed to help prevent a fire, etc if the antenna is struck by lightening. the glass acting as an insulator. i've heard it doesn't really work, but i wouldn't know from experience.

The Glass Jar? A Myth?

The "theory" is, as another stated, that the Glass jar will insulate or reduce flashover from nearby lightning strikes to other nearby equipment or cables. The Cable was unscrewed from the coax switchbox in the shack and stuck down into a Jar as an old Ham's habit. :)

Note the word "nearby", as a direct strike coupled down the coax will likely turn said coax into melted licorice sticks AND blast the Jar into smithereens.. :) Hence the "wonder why nobody has commented" query I made earlier. :)

In reality, the glass (or thick porcelain - perhaps better) probably would not explode unless it was sealed, forcing expanding, superheated air to escape at all costs. The open jar would probably, therefor, not explode. (Pure guesstimation) ;-)

In all honesty, I have (over my 55+ years as a ham) never seen an exploding pickle jar, but HAVE seen small arcs from center conductor to outer connector rings with nearby storms..

A small comfort, perhaps, but not one to be relied on..

Use at your own risk, if so inspired.. :)

I just ordered 3 commercial Blitz-Bugs-type protectors myself for my Mountain cabin shack.. :)
