Ok, I did a quick map of the UHP areas today. My next thing I want to work is a map of Fire Station and there Response areas. I know where many of the stations are but not all. Anyone have a good list of county wide and SLC stations? The next part, and more difficult will be finding the response areas. Hope you all can help get the info together and I will make it into a sweet looking map.

Its coming along....

Well part one of this project has gone quite well. I have decided to expand the project with tons of information great for scanning in Salt Lake County. The first part which I have completed (mostly) is locating all the fire stations in Salt Lake County. I have attached the file that can be unzipped then opened with Google Earth, available here for free: http://earth.google.com/

I need information on the locations of the South Jordan Fire stations. The next phase will be identifying the apparatus from each station. I was able to get some of them already. I then will add police stations and sub-stations. As we get more information I will be making this into a "master scanning map" for Salt Lake County. Have a look at what I got so far, ket me know any ideas, comments, suggestions, and information you want added as WE build this ultimate tool :)

South Jordan only has two stations...

Station 62 is at 4022 West 10400 South. It is the one that houses the Large 18-wheeler Rescue Trailer. I will try and get some details and pictures for your map project.

I will see what I can dig up on station 61...

Station 61 is located at 10758 South Redwood Road, South Jordan

Online Hosting

Hey Utah_Viper What about hosting the file online (Network Link) and that way any changes are automatically pushed out to everybody?

I run a webserver and would be happy to host the file and can provide you or whoever FTP upload access, or the file can just be sent to me and I can update it.

We would still have to send out a base file, but all it would do is point back to the one on the server. I have a KMZ for the various EOCs in Salt Lake County, so I could add that data in. Also I have a listing of all of the hospitals....

How does that work? I first was going to just use google maps. I found though using the Google Earth software is better since I can set up folders. That way I can turn on and off which items I want to have visible. In time I'm hoping we can have a master scanners map that will have PD, FD, Hospital, EOC, and any other items. Possibly add overlays of patrol beats and what not. Do you have some experience with .kmz and Google Earth?

Basically the KMZ file is hosted on a public server like a web server and then we send out a KMZ to everybody that links back to the one that is on the server. This way the file that is sent out is only a pointer and changes only need to happen in one place. The disadvantage is that it requires internet access. But we could also post a direct file if people wanted it.

Yea, Last year I was doing quite a bit of playing with Google Earth and Google Maps. I created some maps for the Wasatch 100 (http://www.wasatch100.com) that show all of the rest stops. This was done using the Google Map API and a ton of data points for the course. I also put the same info into Google Earth and pulled in weather overlays so that we could keep an eye on the weather while working the event.

I will do some playing today and tonight and see if I can get an EOC Network map online. If it works, I can easily add in the fire map that you created. (good work by the way)

I have started adding the Police agencies. So far I have West Valley and UHP (withe the areas that were done before)

One thing I am also doing is adding information to each department about what system they are on and the TGID's

Sounds like bneilson knows what to do and I would like working together to make a very interesting tool that can be used by scanner enthusiasts. Also if any other members here have thoughts about what would be useful on a map type interface let us know!

Just don't put sooooo much on it that it becomes too cluttered to give us fast, reliable information.

That is one reason I'm doing it in google earth. you can easily turn on and off the layers that are not needed. I can also make available just .kmz of the fire and one for police. I want a "one size fits all" as well that can cover most everything.

Network Link Version

Ok, here is the first swing at a network linked version...

All you need to do is load the KML file attached and it will connect to the server and pull down the locations. When the network file changes you will automatically see the changes next time you open up Google Earth.

Make sure you save it to My Places, or it will be lost when you close Google Earth and you will have to re-download the KML file...

Let me know if there are any problems. This version has the EOCs and Fire Departments minus South Jordan included....

Well there are a few ways...

1) I can setup and FTP and you can FTP changes. This works as long as only one person is working on it at a time...

2) Changes can be sent to me and I can update the file. You would simply just create new KMZ files and send them to me via email, and then I would consolidate them to the network version...

Either way works for me... It would actually probably be best to just email the changes to me but whatever works.

I will contact you via PM for e-mail details. I am working on a "master" map that will have all the things. We can seed a update as needed, probably a bit for the first few weeks as we tweak the design and information.

You guys are both crazy and awesome at the same time! Keep it up!

Would it be possible to also have a layer listing the RID's for each station or department?

The .kmz is a network file so updates should update to everyone if you make changes. as to the RID, if someone has the correct info it could just be added to each stations information. I also plan to add pictures and more details

If I can be of assistance here I have spent countless hours taking pictures of all the fire stations in the valley and have pictures of numerous pieces of apparatus from the different agencies including the new Murray City ambulances that should be going into service soon. Let me know what you need.

That would make a excellent addition!! Are you familiar with Google Earth, and how to edit it? If not put the pictures somewhere, with good notes where I can grab them and I can work on that.
