This is my CHIRP pack that includes:
  • Valley Fire Departments (scan list)
  • NS Fire departments on VHF (not all of them)
  • No repeaters
  • Search & Rescue (Canadian & Mutual aid)
  • Marine 16
  • GMRS (scans CH20
  • MURS
  • Weather

This is for VFF only.
These are not waterproof.
If you wish to scan NS fire departments turn duplex to OFF, and select how many stations you wish to scan.
  • slot 0 is NS VHF pager [FIRECTR]
  • slot 99 is VHF simplex, Mutual Aid, FireAid
  • squelch is set for 40 over 123 (position 4)
  • Alarm / Call is set to transmit EMERG tone

This CHIRP image is for UV5R BFS311,
slots can be copied over to other CHIRP images.

if you are looking for a VHF antenna better than stock,
search eBay
Golden VHF144MHz SMA-F Radio Antenna Kenwood HYT TYT WOXUN BAOFENG BF UV5R,
these can also be used on Kenwood TK2207 (which is a cheap upgrade from the UV5R)
but note it is horrible for UHF.

hey im in the same boat as you it wont let me email , but my email is patmcmullin911@hotmail.com
im looking to be able to send and recieve on all vally fire departments mostly in kings ,hants and annapolis county. these are the ones we run mutal aid to the most . If we go out side of these areas we usally use the new TMR radio or we have the motorolas and kenwoods as these are far better and durable. Im basically looking to have it to monitor mostly but like i said sometimes if we are at car accidents and we are doing traffic we have few radios and have to use hand signals, which looks foolish as you can imagine..Im currently in the new minas fire department, so the marine channels would be awesome to have as well where we run a boat/dive team as well.....i was able to get the stock software to work but cannot get the soft ware from chirp to work.It was telling that the radio was unable to ack the programming blah blah blah if that makes any sense.

keep working with the CHIRP software
Beginners Guide - CHIRP
in short you'll need to download from the radio to CHIRP,
open one of the CHirp files I attached earlier,
copy all those
and paste those locations into the 1st slot of what you downloaded 1st.
save the new Chirp as Valley-fire.img or something
then upload that list to the radio.

another option using stock software:
here is a csv (generic file)
I've zipped it.
You download and unzip it
then import the .csv file into the stock software if it allows it.
Then customize what slot/locations you wish to have in what order and what you want on the scan list

as far a Marine channels go
I believe CH71 is used in upper Fundy as well as non commercial vessels (where I am)
Fishing boats, commercial vessels use 69, 73
Lower Fundy I think uses CH12.
Close to the water your signal will travel far so no need to use full power.
