Had an old Navy surplus receiver (weighed about 50 - 75 pounds I think) and strung a wire out of a window to something. Listened to a lot of stuff. The local ham club gave a code class and I got into that. I still don't care for an Instructograph! Got a Novice license from W5WDD around '65-66. Borrowed home-brew transmitter (3 crystals) and that old Navy receiver. Filled out 8 - 10 log pages with CQ's with no answers. Finally someone answered me and scared the S*** out'a me!. Up-graded to a Ranger II transmitter and a Drake 2C receiver (that was really up-town!). Later a DX-60 and that Drake 2C. Had more fun than ought'a be legal!

I got both my Novice & Tech tickets at the same time in 1966, so I started out with a Hammarlund HQ-170AC-VHF receiver/expensive boat anchor (all ham bands through 6, plus 2 via a transverter) and an Ameco TX-62 AM/CW transmitter, running into a Hy-Gain 6 & 2 meter 6-element beam.
