• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I brought a radio to the local radio shop to get programmed and they said they couldn't do it because the flashcode did not support conventional operation. They said it needed G48 in the flashcode. Was it just something with that radio or is this true? Does the flashcode have to say "conventional operation" aka G48 or will any radio default to Conventional? The reason I'm asking is because I've heard both are true. Thanks for any help.

What kind of radio is it?

I can't see why it would not do conventional, could be they are either idiots or they just don't want to program it for you and giving you some BS.

Either way I'd suggest not going back unless you have no choice.

I don't know man, more often than not it seems some of the shops have no idea about anything except one or two model lines and that's it.

Example: "Astro saber, never heard of it"

The only one that I found that knew anything told me that they get their main info off Batlabs.

It was an astro spectra (vhf). I bought the radio off ebay and I found out that somebody upgraded the flashcode wrong and I think that was the problem why they couldn't program it for me. They weren't giving me any BS because they've programmed many for me in the past with no problem. Im' just wondering if the codeplug or something was corrupt seeing though it was force fed a new flashcode.

However, does the radio have to have G48 in it's flashcode to do conventional or will it default to conv. regarless of other bells and wistles it'll do?

Wondering because I'm looking at buying an VHF xts2500 and the flashcode does not state whether it has G48 (conv.) or not.

Thanks

When someone starts doing a half-assed hack job on an astro series radio, bad things can easily happen. I'm not the one to comment on what an Astro Spectra can do (or how to fix the issue) since I've never used one (or hacked on one).

I am not aware of any reason the XTS2500 will not do conventional. All the astros (AS1, AS3, XTS3K, STX5K) I have owned had flashcodes that did not indicate conventional use yet they all did it.
