I'm getting close call hits in Chambersburg on 161.8250 (control channel? constant signal) and 161.8500 (NAC 195h). Traffic seems to be EMS and police dispatch among other things. Any ideas what this is?

161.8500 NAC 195 received at my location is one of the voice channels for site 1-008 (Rappahannock County VA) of the STARS system in Virginia. 161.8250 NAC 191 at my location is the CC of site 1-009 (Frederick County VA) of STARS. Must either be something else in Chambersburg or great reception conditions.

The close call hits were picked up on the east side of Chambersburg. The signal is max strength. Activity was on TGs 19 and 5070. 19 appeared to be a police dispatch.

We'll go with reception!

Not buying that a tower 91 miles away is going to max out the S-meter and generate several dozen Close Call hits. And the STARS system has more than 2 talkgroups.

Something weird is going on with this. I'm still getting full-strength signal on the freqs, and the chatter is consistent with the Rappahannock area of VA (one call referenced a disabled vehicle at mile marker 263 on I-81). But I did an elevation plot in Google Earth, and there is a ridgeline over 1000' higher than that area and my location. So the signal is starting out at about 600', going 20 miles, crossing a 1900' ridgeline, then going another 70 miles to a 650' elevation. That seems to be a pretty unlikely scenario for getting a consistent strong signal.

At my location the received signal on 161.8500 has always been stronger than on the other voice freqs of the site such as 161.9000 etc. It's been that way from whenever the site went online years ago.

I can hear this tower fairly easily in Hagerstown most of the time. I'm quite sure you're hearing the VSTARS system. I used to be able to hear the old conventional Culpepper VHF dispatch channels when they used them. So they must have a really good tower setup. But it's too much of a coincidence for the frequencies, NACs, and talkgroups to match up. You're hearing VSTARS. One other thing to consider: I don't know if you're using a Uniden or a GRE/Whistler/RS, but generally the equivalent Close Call for the GRE radios (Signal Stalker) is much more easily triggered than Uniden's Close Call feature.

It's definitely the Virginia system. They must be running a lot of power and/or have a really good tower location and setup. I'm using a 436HP and a ST-2 on a mast about 30' high. I guess I have a really good receiver, at least for VHF.

The only other weirdness is that I'm only getting 2 talkgroups, 19 and 5070.

Could someone in range of this system please post the current Channel ID table for this system from pro96com, or the tower.txt file?
