• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'm looking into setting up a crosslink between frs and zello. I'm getting confused over the connectors for the radios.

Midland uses a 2-pin connector (S5 I think) and Motorola uses a 2.5mm combined connector. I'm not sure if either of these has a standard way of patching over to a common TRRS w audio and mic.

Does anyone have experience with this setup and have tips? Is there a radio w a standard TRRS connector that can directly patch over?

Just the inexpensive handhelds. I don't have one yet... Looking to get what works best for the setup. Motorola talkabouts have the single 2.5mm jack, while midlands have the 2 pin.

I've been able to make this work with a CCR previously. I purchased an APRS cable that has the 2 pin K connector on one end and a TRRS on the other. I then turned on Vox in Zello running on an old Android phone I had laying around, as well as on the radio. It isn't perfect, but it did work. Do expect there to be small delays and cutoffs at the start of transmissions as vox activates.

ETA: I don't know of a cable like this specifically for Midland or Motorola, but you could probably kludge one together. I do know you can find "better" (fancier) solutions on eBay by searching for Zello Crosslink or Zello Gateway, but I don't have experience with those.

I haven't used FRS in quite some time; however, I'm pretty sure the FCC would frown on this from a legality standpoint. I don't believe that linking in FRS is allowed.

I say do it... even if talking on the zello app, you are still using a 2 watt frs radio as the donor. That means even when talking through zello and when it comes out on donor radio, it's still on the 2 watt limit and all. Honestly the only way someone would even know or care that you're doing it is if you tell them... if the govt can breaks rules every day and lie to our faces, then you should be able to also.... (I know I will catch **** for that one from the Karens).
