If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey all,
Just looking for some opinions regarding a radio I've just picked up.
It's a motorola xpr that I bought from an aquantince with the intention to use it as a scanner for a local dmr system. My concerns arise from the fact that as far as I can determine, all XPR73**(e) radios refer to units without keypad or display with XPR75**(e) radios having display and keypad.
While the guy I purchased the radio from was sure it was a 7350, the photos showing a display and keypad had me thinking he was just out to lunch. Having actually purchased it I can now say that indeed the model number indicated on the radio itself is 7350. So while I'm not necessarily worried, I'm curious as to what this means. As far as I can find on the net, only 75**s have displays. The model number sticker doesn't seem to have been messed with in anyway, so it seems logical to conclude this is a 7350. Obviously these statements contradict.
Were 7350s produced with screen and keypad? or is this a 7550 thats had the model number changed? Or is it something else entirely?
Looking under the battery there appears to be an additional sticker, but as far as I can conclude it only indicates an firmware(?) upgrade(R02.40.20->R02.50.05)

As you've correctly concluded 7350's typically do not have a display or keypad. My immediate reaction is that it's some kind of hacked-up unit built from parts, however, that wouldn't explain the case badge saying 7350, or the fact it has a 7350 model number. I would guess that it's some kind of engineering article or test unit that was never intended to go beyond the lab.

What is the long model number on the sticker? And does that model and serial match what CPS reports?

I've only had this thing for a couple hours, with my main priority being let it scan as its been programmed and assess where I'm at (earlier investigations into using motorola radios as scanners yielded the prospect of 10x the headache then the improvement in audio would be worth). So I haven't yet gone to the trouble of acquiring CPS or the programming cable(ordered). However it was my assumption aswell that it was likely hacked together. Looking under the battery, going off model number a unfiltered google search turns up a number of references to 7350s and 7350es. However like you say, I'm not sure that fully explains how a 7350 model number and 7350 badge turn up on what appears to be a 7550 body(If you're hacking them together would you not leave the 7550 sticker?).[EDIT: IIRC(and i may very well not) would the firmware versions not put it outside of early test units?(again, don't quote me, its a vague memory from likely going down a 4am rabbit hole)] I've attached a picture of the stickers under the battery. While one appears to be partially missing, the removed sections almost perfectly matches up with a silvery transposition on what appears to be gluey-section on the battery side .

[EDIT#2: Sticker labeled "R02.50.05" is what I initially referred to as what I assumed to be a potential indication of firmware upgrade from (again what I presume to be) initial firmware of "R02.40.20"]

Seems like the radio was upgraded from an XPR7350 to an XPR7550. This is possible by using means not discussed here. The sticker on the back is just a piece of plastic that is interchangable and it seems when the previous owner rehoused the radio they didn't bother changing the name plate out and left it as a 7350 tag.

OP would you be able to go into the software and tell us what the radio's model number and TANPA is from the CPS? This will truly be able to tell us what the radio and CPS thinks the radio is.

Otherwise if the radio is working fine, I'd say there is no cause for concern. I'd upgrade the firmware and enjoy the radio as is.

I was just going to point out the same thing.... if it has a 16 channel selector, then it started life as a 7350.

I have one of these at home too... the guts were stuffed into a 7550 housing, some un-mentionable software magic was performed and away you go.

Still waiting on programming cable and a friend with CPS to confirm how it displays there. It does however appear to be a 7350 thats been turned into (at least in part) a 7550

It does indeed have a 16 channel selector.

Regarding this un-mentionable magic, what impact would this have on upgrading firmware and what not going forward? Would it be as simple as treating it as if it was a 7550? Or would ongoing magic be needed to deceive any perceptions of it being a 7350

When you upgrade the firmware on the radio, the firmware package uses the file that fits the radio's TANPA. So this shouldn't be a problem and the CPS should upgrade it just fine.
