To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

i believe i know the answer from looking around at my current programming but figured i might have missed something and someone here might know.
can i have a knob set up for conventional VHF 2 tone alerting and after receiving the correct 2pair have the pager revert to our P25 system to monitor the call?
we currently dispatch on our coutnies Phase2 P25 system on our dispatch TG but may be changing to a central dispatch center that will dispatch on our backup VHF repeater.
My backup plan is to just program Knob 1 as VHF 2tone paging and then make knob 2 our dispatch and operations channels on the TRS so our guys will have to listen to the dispatch on knob 1 then change to knob 2 as they are responding, trying to take that extra step out if i can but havent seen anyway to currently do this.

i thought so just wanted to make sure i didn’t miss something, i’ve been working with this software and programming our pagers for about 3 years now so i have a good idea of what they can and can’t do, but u never know sometimes u might miss the one thing u need. we are still a decent bit away from changing dispatches so maybe in between the new one will come on board with paging on p25
thanks for the reply

This is what I currently do for our department. I've had issues with P25 TGID alerting with our dispatch setup, but thankfully they still send the tones over analog too for us. So I have analog alert as our main knob 1 position, then knob 2 position is our digital dispatch channel. For me as soon as I hear it go off, I switch it to our digital channel so we can hear all the other traffic and who is all responding.

We have been dispatching on our P25 dispatch TG for 3 years with no issues thankfully, But if we change from our local PD to a central dispatch we may get patched into a TG on their current system and we aren’t sure if they are going to want to tone us out on said TG, so we may have to fall back to our VHF legacy channel (which is still up and running and simulcast on)for paging only

” to a central dispatch“.. IF Somerset County, they stopped supporting most (but not all) multicast. Reason offered was it was difficult to maintain and support at the console level and in the field (phone lines and equipment). Somerset discontinued many of these about two years ago. I am not aware of any being added. I have not seen any P25 paging on Somerset TRS.

Technically, a new multicast was added at the beginning of 2022 for an EMS group page. One of the agencies in that group is still on VHF, and so they are multicasting 154 and 470 to complete the page. Said agency is potentially moving over to 470, as several tests were conducted in the past weeks with their tones. No information on official progress, but that multicast remains in effect.

so we may have to fall back to our VHF legacy channel (which is still up and running and simulcast on)for paging only

As rr60 inquires, if your reference to central dispatch is Somerset County, your agency could also be asked to join the Fire High dispatch frequency for Somerset County on 154.310, which is still in service. Is it P25? No. But unless citation can be made of coverage issues or other mission-critical stipulations, there is no guarantee that the use of the backup VHF paging system will be entertained.
