• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I’m new to the world of cb and I’m looking at purchasing a used galaxy dx33hp. I’m wondering if this radio is a cb or if I am going to need a ham license to use it?

Only needs a conversion to run Eleven. Something done to these radios for twenty years. See Utu vids or CB Tricks (remove some resistors).

See Walcott Radio website.
Truck drivers ARE the customers.

They wouldn’t sell it otherwise.
10 is a way to get more power.
Loophole.

Galaxy talks great on AM. I have several.
You’ll enjoy it.

@Jehirsh2386, since you say that you are new to the world of CB, please be aware that what @slowmover is proposing you do to the radio is strictly illegal and could result in hefty fines and/or jail terms. And while @slowmover will probably say that the probability of you being caught is slim to none, you are still committing an illegal act that could result in hefty fines and/or jail terms. The right thing to do is to get yourself something like the President McKinley CB Radio that is completely legal and highly praised. Cheers and welcome to the hobby! Dave

By the way @Jehirsh2386, if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. It is better to ask before you buy the wrong things so you don't regret it later. LOL! :ROFLMAO: Great bunch of folks here ready to help you out.

I own the Galaxy DX33HML. This is the predecessor to the radio you are looking at. Mine, although technically a 10-meter rig, has a primary AM CB band of 40 channels.

Do not transmit outside of the approved 11-meter band and you will commit no violation and therefore no one will have a reason to rattle your doorstep. Galaxy radios have some of the best factory audio on the market.

Although like K4EET said, the McKinley is a fine specimen and entirely legal.

Things that will get you an FCC visit are few and far between, but encroaching on or using unapproved frequencies can be one of them, particularly if you are running excessive power and/or causing harmful interference.

The harmful interference part is what is likely to get you, if anything will. I'd wager that 99 percent of those cited by the FCC began with causing some sort of interference - to the degree that they caused multiple agencies to become involved and basically hand the FCC an investigation on a silver platter.

Fines and confiscation are the typical penalties. I know of no one in the last 20 years or more to ever get jail time or any incarceration for a violation. In a world of drug dealers and human trafficking, the odds of jail time are virtually non-existent. However, be advised that using unapproved frequencies typically results in local hams taking notice, investigating and documenting, and then filing multiple complaints, to the point the FCC has everything they need.

You’re full of it.

Go to jail, did you, for your last traffic infraction? As that’s at the discretion of the judge. Lost a months income in penalties? Same thing.

Whats the ratio of traffic tickets to FCC actions on CB? Ten million to one? Because it sure ain’t less.

There may be better radios (I agree on the McKinley; have other posts to that effect), but a guy might want a half-dozen radios. The 33 ought to be fun to play with. Enjoy it without any cares.
