This fire is in the Sierra NF and started August 24. it is over 9000 acres with no containment yet. Is anyone in the Fresno/Tulare county area
monitoring the NIFC frequencies yet? Are any main command channels known as yet?

I was monitoring on Sunday afternoon as I drove up to a spot NNE of McKinley Grove, about 15 miles from the Garnet fire. I got to enjoy some mobile HF radio time and pew! pew! fun. I finally got a whiff of the smoke just before 5PM and headed back down before things got worse. The smoke was now in the trees by then and it wasn't until around Chawanakee that I got out of the smoke. People camping overnight up there took a hit on their lungs.

On the way down the four lane I looked down toward Sierra High School and saw heavy smoke low down in that valley. That smoke was coming from the Watts Valley / Tollhouse fire that had just started. The air boss working the Garnet fire couldn't get a good eye on it due to the Garnet fire smoke. It was at that time I heard whomever announcing the road closures and evacuation areas, which I just drove from.

As I was driving I did not look at the scanner, but just kept it on to monitor. Here are the CDF frequencies I have in that scanner. They are for our area with the respective tones. I'm hoping they lift the evacuation order by October as we have a Cal QSO event planned for up there. We shall see.

Anyways, this particular scanner is on 24/7 when I'm up there. Here are the USFS frequencies I also monitor while up there. From 5000-7500' ASL, I can RX quite a bit. I was busy since this morning and did not get to monitor today from home.

I'm hearing most of the Air Attack comms on...
167.0625 NIFC AIR TAC
I notice this frequency isn't in the database? I just have it in my scanner , possibly an older codeplug.
It's pretty active.

Thank Norcalscan, this is great.
However some of these frequencies are not listed in the NIFC database.
Such as the Air Tactics 167.0625, which is very active.

Frequencies used on large fires are often not on the NIFC Frequency List. Sometimes frequencies allotted to other federal agencies in the area, but not in current use are temporarily used for large fires or other types of emergencies. Those allotted may not show up on subsequent incidents or years. As scanner listeners we have no way of knowing what frequencies this pool of them consists of. Each communications unit leader carries a disc of all federal assignments and then may ask to use a certain one and the nearest Geographical Area Coordination Center passes along a request from NIFC for approval. To familiarize yourself with more information on this go to the NIFC Frequency List and hit the Wiki button where this is further explained. A number of us have been tracking the use of these frequencies for quite some time and their are no patterns to what is used, it appears very random to us.

For those who wonder why Channel 9, NIFC Tac 5 is labeled for "Garlic," it is a nearby small fire initial attack under the command team assigned to the Garnet Fire. It is listed at 0.88 acres.
