Gilpin County U/D: Medical Choppers can't fly due to weather but Sky 7 is in the area trying to communicate with Gilpin 1 (Sheriff) on FERN. Also advising a snowcat will probably be needed.

For Immediate Release

May 8th, 2007

At about 5:00 p.m. Colorado Wing Civil Air Patrol received a request from Gilpin County to assist in the location of a down aircraft. The passenger had called 911 with an approximate location. The plane is believed to have gone down near Blackhawk.

CAP had an airplane launched within 45 minutes. In coordination with the Gilpin County Sheriff, CAP requested assistance from the National Guard with a high altitude helicopter with winch capabilities. The National Guard sent a Blackhawk helicopter from Buckley AFB at 6:37 p.m. The Blackhawk was directed to the scene of the crash. The CAP aircraft assisted with communications between the ground teams and the Blackhawk helicopter. At 7:42 the crew of the helicopter reported that they had one survivor on board and the pilot was deceased.

Both the CAP plane and the Blackhawk helicopter are still onscene at this time. An update will be provided after the crews return safely.

Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with almost 60,000 members nationwide. It performs 95% of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and counter drug missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members take a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to the almost 25,000 young people currently participating in CAP cadet programs. CAP has been performing missions for America for more than 60 years. Information about the Colorado Wing of the CAP is available on the web at http://www.coloradowingcap.org.

BLACK HAWK - Professional golfer Jeff Maggert says the man killed Thursday in a single-engine plane crash near Black Hawk was his brother, Barry, of Carbondale.

Barry Maggert and another man were on board a Cessna when it went down. Authorities have not officially released their identities, but they did say the pilot killed was 55 and the passenger who survived is 23.

ESPN.com is reporting that the pilot was the older brother of professional golfer Jeff Maggert.

Jeff Maggert withdrew from The Players Championship golf tournament Thursday, according to ESPN.com, and told officials that his brother died in a small plane crash in Colorado en route to his son's college graduation.

The Gilpin County Sheriff's Department says the plane crashed about four miles west of Black Hawk in the Miner's Gulch area around 4:15 p.m. on Thursday.

The Aspen Daily News reported the 1965 Cessna 1982 was co-owned by Barry Maggert and Carroll Winkler, who said that Maggert was flying the plane to Boulder for his son's graduation from the University of Colorado.

Authorities say the passenger was able to use his cell phone and call 911 for help. He told dispatchers he was covered in fuel, but was able to get out of the plane.

The Black Hawk Fire Department says the plane crashed near the Central City graveyard.

Boulder Police say the plane was headed to Boulder when it went down. It originated in Glenwood Springs and the men on board were headed to a graduation ceremony.

Authorities say ground rescuers were unable to reach the wreckage, so a helicopter was requested from Buckley Air Force Base and was able to get the survivor from the plane crash area.

Crews lowered themselves down from the helicopter to rescue the man.

The Civil Air Patrol says the survivor was brought onto the helicopter around 7:45 p.m. and the pilot was dead.

Crews are still trying to reach the pilot who is remains at the plane wreckage site. They suspended recovery operations on Thursday night, but plan to resume work on Friday morning.

The Gilpin County Sheriff's office has not officially released the names of the pilot and passenger. The passenger's condition was unknown.

Heard traffic on Gilpin Blue (154.86), lots on Gilpin Red (153.845), and numerous references to Green-- never did find that one, and it's not in the database. Anyone know what Green is?
