--Hi, all. Does anyone know of a good, quality GMRS base antenna with real gain? Something along the lines of the Decibel DB-404 or DB408, but not as expensive? It doesn't have to be a "dipole array" like the Decibel antennas, though. It can be a one piece fiberglass antenna. I am just wanting a "real" antenna, and not a cheaply made, fall-apart one. I used to know of several different brands, but none come to mind right now. Thanks.

Our regional REACT team is using the Cushcraft UHF FRX450 as found on page five of the listings below as item # 92. It has much more than the 3db gain that others have (in DBd) and does a great job for us, giving just under 100 watts ERP with a monitored 27 watts into the antenna. There may be some others that you might be interested in on those 5 pages, but look at # 92 as a comparison of price, features and gain.

I just put up one of these colinear ground planes a couple of months ago, so I can't attest to its longevity. However, its price is low enough that I could afford to replace it. Technically, it is working well. Very low SWR and claims 6db gain. So far I haven't seen or experienced anything on it that is shoddy construction. I wouldn't use it for a commercial site, but it's fine for what I do with GMRS:

It's easy to assemble and tune, lightweight, and easy to put up. And costs half or less than the others I've looked at. (And someone will likely ring in here to tell me it's junk...)

--Thanks for the replies guys.

--POPNOKICK: I indeed ordered that same antenna from Antenna Warehouse last week. I have a two meter ham antenna that looks exactly like the one from Antenna Warehouse (except longer length, of course). However, just today, I looked at the base of my two meter antenna, and there is a large, one inch crack in it! The other day, the crack was not there, so I am assuming that water was in the antenna and it froze and expanded. A while back, we had two or three nights of freezing weather, so that's probably what happened. Not counting the "crack", it is a good antenna. All it needs is some proper weather proofing. Make sure you seal up all places that water can get into. I should have done it myself.

I have a spare GP-9NC for sale, which makes a great GMRS base antenna. The antenna is new in package but the package has some scuff marks. $100 + shipping.

Shipping from where, and is it UPS shippable ?

I'm interested in it.

I just bought a Tram 486 UHF antenna from R.K. Leef Co. to use on the Louisville METRO-REACT team's repeater that will be located at my station. The information sheet that I read said that the 486 has 6.5 db gain so you might want to look at that one.The website is www.rkleef.com

Make sure you weatherproof the heck out of it before you put it up.

Tram's are well known for water-related problems.
