• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Sorry ahead of time if this is the wrong forum for this. Can anybody give me any ideas on a UHF GMRS paging transmitter. What I'm looking to do is hook something up to our phone intercom system that will transmit to the radios that we use on our lot. I'm a parts manager at a busy RV dealership and I'm always running around and not always able to hear out intercom system, but I always carry a radio that I use to contact other employees. I know there's gotta be something like that out there that can do this, I thought about turning the VOX function on on one of radio to see if it would activate by one of our intercom speakers.

There are some legal issues that would need to be addressed, first.
1. you would need to have a license for the frequency you are planning on using. If you don't have one, you will not be able to get one. FCC stopped licensing businesses on GMRS many years back.

2. "interconnection", that is, connecting phones to GMRS is strictly forbidden by the rules. Even internal phone lines.

3. The pages going out over the GMRS radios would need to be identified with a call sign. One way paging is allowed, but a consumer grade GMRS radio, even in VOX mode will not ID on it's own.

What you are trying to do can be done, but where you are trying to do it raised the legality issue.

You would need to take the output of your paging system and interface that to a radio. The output of the paging amp will vary and need some altering to bring it to the right level needed by the radio. You will also need some sort of interface to connect the radio's push to talk circuit. VOX, while it would work, creates a lot of issues as any sort of hum/noise on the audio could keep the radio keyed up. Dead keying a radio like that long term will usually cook it. It's also really inconsiderate to any other GMRS users in the area.

Probably a more appropriate solution is called for here. GMRS isn't the right place to do this.

Unless you and your whole staff are licensed GMRS users you are already operating illegally and could face a fine like this one.

Part 90 to the rescue!

... I think phone patches are still legal in part-90 land, or have the F¢¢'s bed partners in the monopolistic cell phone industry lobbied that out of existence by now?
