• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

The base is likely brass, so it won't rust. It's just a cosmetic issue. You can try touching it up with a black sharpie marker.

You need the correct size wrench or a large enough adjustable wrench. Run by Harbor Freight over in Salinas and pick one up for a few bucks. Or check with your neighbors. Someone is bound to have a wrench big enough to loosen it up.

I usually unscrew my antennas each time I wash my truck. Partially to wash underneath, partially to check for corrosion or any other issue.

Brass corrosion can, generally, be broken with a bit of shock loading. (Part of why firefighting appliances are made of brass.)

As mentioned, get a wrench that fits. If it is beyond hand tight, with a properly fitting wrench, some light tapping on the wrench handle should break it loose. (If not, apply some PB Blaster to the threads, let it wick for a few hours, and try again.)

I also remove my antennas when washing vehicles. Once you get the antenna off, you may want to consider using a bit of silicone dielectric grease on the base threads. You don't need much, just enough to lightly coat the threads. This should make the antenna easier to remove in the future. As far as the scratch goes, it's mainly a cosmetic issue but a Sharpie or some touch up paint should fix it up just fine. (Be sure to apply paint with it off the vehicle though. I don't want you cursing me if the paints gets spilled on your car ;-)

Too much torque on the frozen nut can distort the sheet metal. Some penetrating oil will help. Be careful of the paint. Careful tapping the nut on all sides will help loosen it up and wick up the oil. If it still does not budge, heat up the nut with a hair dryer all around and it will expand a bit.
