Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am trying to assist someone online in programming his Radioddity GM-30 My general assumption is that some GMRS radios are:

1) Simplex Only.

2) The ones that can be programmed for repeater operation might not be capable of split PL tone.

Obviously, a land mobile radio like a Motorola will do split PL tone, but is that pretty uncommon on a cheap Chinese radio or a blister pack radio?

Anyway, if anybody can suggest a simple website for the Radioddity GM-30, I will pass it along to him.

All of the radios being sold as GMRS (post 2017 rule changes) of which I am aware are repeater capable. The GM-30 is for sure.

Are you trying to program by hand, or are you using the vendor software? The software definitely allows split tones. I can't say for sure that they *work* (since there isn't a nearby repeater using them) but the option is there.

Thank you for reply. I did not know that and it is, indeed, great to know.

Is it possible that any post 2017 rule change will do PL, but not split PL tone? I know some of my hammy radios years ago would not do split PL tone, but that is comparing apples to oranges.

I don't know if he is using software or programming by hand. He advised a little bit ago that he has it working and I did hear him pop up on the repeater that he was interested in.

Quite possible. Many of these GMRS radios aren't great, and some are less great than others. :)

And as far as ham radios go, I *love* my Yaesu FT-2980R, and it's a fairly new model (manual is copyright 2017) but it won't do split tones. :( Fortunately that's not much of an issue unless you happen to be between two repeaters using the same frequency pair, which is much less common in the ham world than in GMRS.

There are some videos out there of the GM-30 doing split DCS and CTCSS. They set it from the menu on the radio. No idea about software, as I don't own any of these.
