Carmen and anyone else sick of repeater nonsense in Phoenix:
1) Get an outdoor antenna, Diamond X50 or better, and put it up at least 30' in the air using LMR-400.
2) Attach to 50w VHF rig.
3) Tune to 146.52 simplex and throw out your call, and if you don't get a response the first time keep trying and listening.
You will find many there who have no love or use for repeaters, and I'm one of them. I have nothing against those who like repeaters, as there is room for many types in the hobby, so each to their own.
That said, simplex is MUCH more casual and less judgmental. You will hear guys on there who have been doing ham radio for 50+ years and who have forgotten more than most repeater guys will ever know in their life. And though they are very knowledgeable, they are NOT judgmental, and will stop QSO's for a breaker, even if it's a new ham / someone they don't know. You don't have someone beating you up if you go 10 minutes and 30 seconds without ID'ing, you don't have the "clique" environment, and you don't have all of the "and now, over to XXXX...." nonsense. People just hold normal conversations, about interesting topics. Give it a try and you will find that simplex is more fun and more of a challenge too. Anybody with an HT in Phoenix can hit the mountaintop repeaters....not too exciting. But making long distance contacts across the whole valley using only your equipment and that of the other station is actually exciting.
