Back story: My son-in-law has an uncle who is disabled and loves to listen to the scanner. His equipment is way, way out of date but they asked me to help them get him at least something he could listen to. So I dug out an old programmable scanner that I had and gave him to replace his ancient crystal-controlled Regency. While I was getting it ready, I sort of decided I might like to listen a bit myself. It's been years since I did.
Anyway, a few YouTube videos later, I ordered some of the RTL-SDR dongles from the big online site, downloaded the software and boom, I am listening to LWIN here in NW Louisiana.
Of course, I'll probably get a "real" scanner at some point, but I am reasonably happy with the $50 setup that I have running. Reception is good. Other than the software and the hardware being a little fiddly and finicky, I like it.
