To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have 6 GP300 radios to programme, I programmed one and then cloned the codeplug to the others.

On 4 of them the cloning went fine.

On one I got a model number mismatch - it's a P94YPC00D5AA whereas the others are P94YPC00D2AA. The problem is that the Tx frequency can't be set to the value I need as the allowable range is 403.0 to 433.0, I need 449.xxxx. I guess there's no way round this limitation?

On the other the codeplug copied OK, all the data is correct, however the channel selection is wrong. Channels 1-4 are fine. If is is set to Ch5 it will only communicate with the other radios if they are set to Ch1, if Ch6 is selected the others have to be on Ch2, if Ch7 is selected they have to be on Ch3 and if Ch8 is selected they have to be on Ch4. What's going on here?

On the channel select problem, someone goturized the radio as it was a 4 channel radio. The microprocessor/firmware IS different for the 2, 4, 8 and 16, chan radios. No simple way around that.

That means the circuit board's been changed? The model number is the 8Ch one.
I think some 8Ch radios can be converted to 16Ch, can't a 4Ch be converted to 8Ch?

Bump.

I'd really like to get all 8 channels working on this GP300 - is there no way to do it?

So I'm wondering ....

From what I can ascertain from your original post, not all the cloning went well. It happens.
So excuse me if I'm reading your OP wrong, but have you tried individually creating and writing a code plug to the radios that did not clone correctly?
And I'll assume you know about the shift trick to get the radio to accept frequencies that are out of band (to a certain extent).

On the one that seems to only be '4 channel' I checked the settings in the codeplug - all were correct. I also re-edited and saved the correct settings - no difference.

Yes I know about the 'shift' trick.

Andy, seeing that you may be new to 'programming radios' The FIRST rule is to read the radio first and save that original 'code plug' in a safe archive BEFORE you do anything.....

"cloning' can and probably did screw up the radios. They may have already been messed up before you got them. 'cloning' BAD...... jamming in a 'codeplug' from a different radio BAD.

The cheapest way to get you an 8 channel GP300 is to probably go source a used one. One that hasn't been jacked around with a changed codeplug, or made into something it wasn't.

As mentioned, you should always read a radio and save that codeplug before you do anything else. You should also know that there are some people who will spend hours jacking around radios and hacking codeplugs to make them do stuff they didn't come with from the factory. It's rarely a worthwhile project, and it's often a surprise to the technician who gets tasked with fixing it.

Yes, I'm new to programming..

So, if cloning is so bad why is the option in the software? It serms the obvious way to programme several radios with the same settings.

All the radios are the same model, I checked the codeplugs on all of them before I started, they were all the same (just 1 channel programmed). I saved a copy of one before editing and saving the new settings to a radio. I cloned a second radio and checked the settjngs and function. Then cloned the rest.. Only one exhibits the '4 channel' problem.

Doesn't matter quite so much now as I've got a couple more GP300s to replace the problem ones, they have both cloned with no problems .
