looking on amazon and found several GPS units that look like they would work for the home patrol, which is the best one?

The USB one won't work (the second link in post #3). You don't have a USB connection between the GPS and scanner.

I would pick the one from Argent Data so you don't need extra cabling.

Wish someone told me this.

Please note that there is a 5v power supply built into the cigarette lighter plug. You can NOT cut off the plug and wire the unit directly to 12v. Doing so will destroy the receiver

I've been looking at these GPS's, both the Garmin and Uniden units.

Garmin GPS
Amazon.com: Garmin 18x PC GPS Navigator Unit: GPS & Navigation

Uniden GPS
Amazon.com: Uniden BC-GPSK Serial GPS Receiver for Scanner and Marine Products: GPS & Navigation

Both require the Uniden GPS Adapter cable:
BWZG1844001

And according to the Uniden Accessory page, the data cable for 396XT is
BWZY1227001

I'm wondering if I could use the supplied serial data cable from that came with the 396XT and 996XT as the GPS adapter cable that goes from the Garmin 9 pin to the 396XT serial or Homepatrol for GPS data. I'm thinking at most a null modem may be required to swap the send and receive lines.

Has anyone used the serial cable that came with the 396/996 along with the Garmin 18x successfully on the 396 or Homepatrol?

Update: I see that the man has spoken already on this topic:

I Use the Garmin 18X with my 996XT But when i ordered my unit it ws a combo pack and came with the required garmin cable and it was a sale for 79.00 $ i had been sitting on the fence about upgrading my GPS unit because it was expensive and then i saw that one day sale thing back towards the end of October for the Garmin with the adapter cable for 79.00 and i jumped at that, and refreshed my whole system.

Yes, I have successfully used the serial cable that came with the 396/996 to connect a Garmin 18x to both a 396 and a HomePatrol. As you correctly guessed, you will need a null modem adapter and you'll also need a gender changer. You can buy the two adapters separately, or you can order a null modem adapter/gender changer combination all-in-one. Either way, the original 396/996 serial cable will work with the appropriate adapter(s).

I use a Uniden GPS receiver. Works perfectly without any issues. I highly recommend it for people that are travelling at all. I travelled from New Brunswick to New Hampshire and didn't have think about what frequencies to switch to, the GPS took care of the whole thing. Well worth the money regardless of which model you choose.
