Hello,

Anyone know a link to download GQRX that actually works ?

I've tried a bunch, and none of them "work".
Error msgs that "it can't find..., etc. "

BTW: How "easy" is gqrx compared to HDSDR and SDRUno ?

Thanks,
B.

Installing on Linux like this

Open the terminal and complete the following lines

sudo apt-get purge --auto-remove gqrx
sudo apt-get purge --auto-remove gqrx-sdr
sudo apt-get purge --auto-remove libgnuradio*

Next.....

sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:bladerf/bladerf
sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:ettusresearch/uhd <----- This can be left out if you want
sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:myriadrf/drivers
sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:myriadrf/gnuradio
sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:gqrx/gqrx-sdr
sudo apt-get update

Next.....

sudo apt-get install gqrx-sdr

You will need the "Extension" of the next Pulse audio control panel if you want to recycle the sound for another program (fldigi, qsstv,.....)

sudo apt-get install pavucontrol

Finally, "sound quality"

sudo apt install libvolk1-bin
volk_profile

Hi,

Much thanks for taking the time to write it all out for me.
Much appreciated.

Frankly, I naively thought it would all be in a "package' that you could simply download and run,
like all of the other SDR programs.

Did want to try the program, and compare with HDSDR and SDRUno.

At my age now, it will be too much for me, I think.
Will stick with HDSDR.

But, thanks again.

Regards,
Bob

On FreeBSD 11.2 it is much easier. As root ...

# pkg install comms/gqrx

The package manager gathers all the dependencies needed to install.

You will probably get an old version through package manager.

GQRX is awesome. If you tell us your distro (operating system) we can give you specifics.
For example in *buntu a simple apt install gqrx-sdr gets you there.

Possible, let's see ...

FreshPorts -- comms/gqrx: Software defined radio receiver powered by GNU Radio and Qt

I'm running 2.11_5 - which also appears to be the latest stable release from csete.

csete/gqrx

Sure, I could download the latest bleeding edge from github but the OP asked for quick and easy. If "BOBRR" wants to install on Ubuntu - these instructions are likely more accurate:

Install Gqrx SDR on Ubuntu Linux – Gqrx SDR

Notice 56F666's first post is a copy / paste of the link above but it omits something important. It is the first line on that page. The OP should know so I quote that here:

gqrx said:
Gqrx has been included in Ubuntu Linux for many years now. Although these versions are often a bit outdated, they may sufficient for your use.

In other words, a recent Ubuntu install may already have GQRX included.

Knowing which SDR(s) would be good too.

Hi all,

So nice of everyone willing to help me out with this; very much appreciated.
Am in my 80's now, so please bear with me a bit.

Have always had sw listening as a hobby, and really enjoy it.
Have a pretty good technical background, but not all that strong in the different languages and their nuances.

Am presently using HDSDR and SDRUno.
Thought it might be fun to play around with Gqrx also.
But the installation of, and using it, would have to be pretty much the level of SDRuno, perhaps; particularly
the installation of. Was really hoping for nothing more than a typical download, and a Click or two.

But, am willing to try.

Have a new HP Destop pc running W10
Radio is a SDRPlay RSP-2

Would be concerned, very, about messing up the W10 OS presently on pc with another OS install.
Don't want to try to set up partitions for each OS, etc. Don't feel "competent" doing it.
Comments re this would also be appreciated.

Can it run under, simply W10 ?

BTW: just for interest: also have a WinRadio G-31 Excalibur, and a Very old JRC NRD 545. Remember those ? Terrific radio/product.

Best regards,
Bob

@BOBRR from the gqrx website:
"Gqrx is distributed as source code as well as binary packages. Supported platform is Linux and to some extent Mac OS X."

Hi,

Thanks again for comments and info.
So-

Realizing I'm not too sharp with computer "stuff," is there a "simple" way to download
something, and get going with gqrx and my RSP-2 on my W10 pc ?

Is the binary package the one to play with ? Single download, and all inclusive ?

Or, should i just assume that there are a multitude of downloads and steps involved, and i should
probably just forget about.

Would like to try with the RSP-2, though, if practical for me.

Thanks,
Bob

Hi,

Oops !
I should have realized it when I saw Linux, but it didn't register.
That old-age thing, I guess.

I do have an iMac also, and would certainly enjoy getting it going on that, if practical for me to do.

Is there an all inclusive, simple, download package for it available ?

Thanks for help,
Bob

Bob you may want to check out SDR Sharp (SDR#) on Win 10.

Also what are your interests as far as listening/monitoring/digital decoding?

That will help decide the best software for your interests.

I am also a high millage senior so I understand the challenge although I have managed to conquer most if not all the SDR toys :)

To be fair, I sacrificed Windows 10 for Linux very recently purely because of GQRX and my SDRPlay RSP2. A great combination, no nagware, pop-ups, updates etc, Linux is a pleasure to use.
Yep and don't throw out those older 32 bit xp machines (laptops in my case) as Linux mint is secure, fast and awesome. I use GQRX daily, the only 2 drawbacks are 1) it's no longer supported (Alex is up to something new) and 2) it was always limited to one VFO.

Hi all,
For, in particular, DRL-XM43.

Have an RSP-2

Am presently using HDSDR on W10.
Quite happy with it, but always interesting to play with other packages.
I also use SDRUno, but find that HDSDR is a bit easier for me.
Have CSVUserListBrowser connected to it, and it really makes for a nice "system".

Would enjoy, I think, playing also with GQRX on my iMac too, but I am limited, frankly,
with simple stuff on the Mac's these days.

So, it there is a complete, simple, full downloadable package for, would certainly
like to give it a try. Installing of it, for me, would have to be "simple".
If not, I'll just stick with HDSDR.

Have never played with SDR#. Should I ?

Interest are really wide; enjoy most anything I can pick up in the evening <30 MHz, but also some
of the Aero and Utility broadcasts above that. Have a long wire ant for <30MHz, and a Scantenna in the
attic for higher. Also have a WinRadio G31 Excalibur which is a super radio; really a fine product.

Thanks all, for the thoughts and suggestions,

Let me have any comments re ease of installation, etc.

Bob

Hi,

Re Skywave:

WOW !

Thanks, never came across it before.

Bob

I have run gqrx in Ubuntu in a virtual machine in VMware Workstation in Windows 7--less that ideal (better run in Ubuntu without having to use VMware).

To be fair, I sacrificed Windows 10 for Linux very recently purely because of GQRX and my SDRPlay RSP2. A great combination, no nagware, pop-ups, updates etc, Linux is a pleasure to use.

I created a live bootable Linux Mint 19.1 external usb drive so that I can do all the linux stuff... I have Gqrx + the Gqrx scanner and use it with DSD+ / Wine to make a decent scanner for receiving analog/digital P25 channels from a Motorolla trunk, of course I use OP25 and a slew of other stuff like satellites, aircraft, ship tracking.

Having both worlds is a good thing, I do not like duel boot so the external usb drive and also a live Mint bootable flash drive do the trick for me.

Windows still has a place for me -- having both is great.

I like SDRTrunk in both worlds, its X platform and will soon have P25 phase II decoding and DMR... which will be awesome.
