Has any SWL/ Ham used a graphic equalizer from a stereo set to help tailor the speaker audio of their HF monitoring. Many radios no longer have a "tone" button and I was wondering what results anyone has had. I feel some undesireible noise might be able to be reduced if put in line with the speaker.

thanks

I use a mixer to control audio from three radios. It's not a graphic eq, but the mixer does have an eq on it.

There are pics in my shack photos...

Yes, I have used 24 and 32 channel graphic equalizers with ham and swl in the past, although I do not use them now. What I did was take the line level audio out of the radio, put that into the EQ, and the line out of the EQ went to an external amplifier and speakers.

This absolutely did, in many cases, help to attenuate certain kinds of noise, and it helped shape the sound so that I could hear the desired signals better. Of course, if you can change / adjust the signal before it is detected to audio in the radio you will get better results, but even doing it at audio can cause real improvement.

Today I use other means to adjust / shape the sound, but have been recently thinking of adding an EQ also.
