I have a PSR500, great scanner. I bought a TRX1 on Amazon about 2 months ago. I really like it. I am thinking about buying a TRX2 in the near future. I have heard that Zip Scanners has good prices on TRX scanners. https://www.zipscanners.com/.

The Whistler WS1040 handheld would be a direct replacement for your GRE PSR-500. Like your GRE PSR-500 the Whistler WS1040 includes the PC programming cable and the AC adapter in the box with the scanner. The following are 2 decent deals available right now on the Whistler WS1040.

1. $245.99 (plus $1.99 shipping) from Newegg.com: WHISTLER WS1040 Digital Handheld Scanner - Newegg.com

2. $249.95 (with FREE shipping if you use promo code FreeShip75 during checkout) from Scanner Master: Whistler WS1040 Digital Handheld Scanner | Scanner Master

As long as it physically still works there's always a use for a scanner even in today's rapidly shifting communications industry as it moves to digital - if it's a scanner that can be tapped it'll live forever with software like Unitrunker and DSD+ at work. Yes that does limit the mobility but sometimes sacrifices have to be made I suppose, and more people own computers than scanners so they're already ahead of the game anyway.

Let us know how the 500 compares with the TRX-1. My 500 stays in my computer room now as it was getting a bit used and the ATT got stuck on. Still works but crippled. I bought a ws1040 on an amazon deal for $190 last month to replace it. Then a few weeks ago Amazon had a lightning deal on BCD436Hp, so I bought that. Now I have 3 HH and only really need 1. I like the ws1040 better, but no phase 2. If I can get a deal on the TRX, I will return or sell the 436 and the 1040, but would like to know how it compares to the 500/1040.

Just poled the plug on a new TRX-1 Whistler Scanner hope it is as good as the GRE 500 was

Out of curiosity where did you pull the plug? The Ham Station seemed to have a very competitive price on the TRX-1 at $469.95 with FREE shipping included (48 states) until December 31st and with no sales tax charged.

Amazon has the TRX-1 for $451, today but it's not prime. I almost ordered it. I like their return policy if I don't like it I have until 1/31/17 for a full refund including return shipping.

The PSR 500 was my first digital scanner. Still Rocking the Illinois Starcom 21system 6 hours everyday. Out performs My BCD 436HP and The TRX 1 on phase 1. Will cry when it dies.

If you have a Discover Card you can get a 5% cashback bonus on your purchases at Amazon.com (up to $1,500) until 12-31-2016 as long as you activate your card beforehand for the 5% promotion.

No discover card, the psr500 and my ws1040 perform flawlessly on p25. My 436 seems to miss a few things. That's why I am looking at a trx-1. I hope to get the 500 repaired and sold. It needs an rf board. The new 1040 is tops, I will keep it regardless of what else i end up with.

I have been consistently impressed with my TRX-1. Easily the best performing scanner I've had, for my area of course. I don't mean to discount anyone else and their experience with other devices. For me the TRX-1 fits the bill and if for some reason I am out of state and cannot legally carry I know that the TRX with its beyond durable rubber condom thing attached could prove useful in a hand-to-hand situation if the need arose.
