I was wondering who all monitors the radios on the great lakes and if you do where do you live?

I live in Baroda MI which is in the bottom west corner of the state. I got my scanner in the winter and have been really busy so I havent had much time to listen. Back in the winter I listened to the marine band and heard a few ships in chicago I think. Im sure in summer theres alot more to hear.

You don't live far from a CG high site in Stevensville so CG traffic should come in clear for you. Remember, "Coast Guard Grand Haven" is actually in Milwaukee at Sector Lake Michigan.

Very close to Cleveland and Lake Erie. I listen to USCG Cleveland and also Fairport Harbor, because that's what I pick up on the standard VHF marine freqs.

What freqs are those? Same as the VHF freqs?

I've got Ch's 8,9,16,22A and 23A in my vehicle's VHF radio and copy Group Milwaukee broadcasts routinely, even though I'm not right on Lake Michigan or anywhere near Milwaukee proper.

I had to cover some midnight shifts a couple weeks ago and was copying Grand Haven on the drive home, which was upwards of a 150 mile haul.

I'm about 50 miles south of Cleveland -- sadly my location is too far away from Lake Erie
to hear any traffic. Sure wish I could tho.

PD/FD/EMS/and all the rest I can get plenty of here. The one service I get no reception
of that I wish I could is marine traffic. No joy in being such an inland landlubber.

I have my 396t on "Search and Store" for marine frequencies. Maybe I'll find some channels active that I don't have programmed??? The scanner is storing some frequencies right now. I only have the scanner proggramed to store a maximum of 100 frequencies.
I think I may use them up.

Channels the 396t caught with Search and Store received 7/3/06.

21a, 81a, 82a, 6, 23a, 83a, 16, 63, 10, 73, 13, 14, 80a, 74, 78a, 13, 11

Granted these were all caught with search and store. I'll have to do some listening.

wabc770, you should be able to hear some HF maritime traffic if all else fails:

Thanks Erik! Yes indeed, I do try to monitor HF maritime activity when I can. I enjoy it.
I'm hoping to upgrade to something like an Icom R75 if possible to improve reception.
I like the TenTec that I use now, but it's PC-controlled and I just can't rid myself
of PC/monitor noise as much as I'd like to.

I just tried to restrict my comments to VHF reception to try to keep it more on-topic
The last few weeks there've been some great band openings in the morning here,
but I still haven't been able to taste success in the 156-157 mHz zone. And I certainly
never do under normal circumstances. Drats !!

Take care and thanks again!

I am in NJ and can heard LI Sound with my ham rig on Ch16 and 21A. For those people living near bodies of water: Have you ever thought about buy like an olds base uni t off ebay and dedicating it just for marine traffic? If I lived closer to the coast I would definitely invest the money!!

I'm monitoring most major marine channels and Sector Detroit traffic from the Toledo Ohio area. Does anybody have maps/locations for the remote USCG transmitter sites around the Lake Erie area?
