GREETINGS, Please clarify a dipole question.

I have an old Grove Omni Dipole, that I wish to "trim" down for use on higher frequencies then it is presently is. For Example A] Do I cut both rods equally at 17 or 18 inches for VHF -Hi" or B] can I cut one rod at 17 or 18 inches for VHF-HI and the other for 24 inches for 118-136 Aviation Band. Simply put, is it the individual rod length that's important, or the overall length of both rods combined that matters most?

So, does the radio signal look at the 2 differently cut rod lengths "collectively" for a total of 18 + 24 inches equaling 42 inches...or....as a 18 inch antenna, and a 24 inch antenna, for their respective bands?
