Here's a question for anyone who can answer it. Back in the late 1960s, early 1970s, what Chicago area police departments used two-ways radios manufactured by the Hallicrafters Corp? This would include UHF band HT's that had drop in amplifiers that boosted their power and range.

Thank you!

Our local EMA (called "Civil Defense" in the 60's) had mobile Hallicrafters FM transceivers. Very similar to Motorola & GE radios, our VHF units had two channels with a big toggle switch to change from F1 to F2. I think they were 100 watt units, remote control head with large trunk unit. As I recalled, they worked very well.

The State of Illinois, via it's various grant programs in the 60's and 70's purchased thousands of Motorola and GE mobile radios for ISPERN and MERCI channels. This influenced many other purchases and helped Motorola and GE hold a virtual duopoly on mobile and portable radios during that time frame.

I recall seeing some Hallicrafters stuff back then but it was pretty unusual. The biggest 3rd vender of the time was probably RCA, they had some pretty decent and basic radios then. We had a few in the agency I worked at in the burbs into the early 1980's.

Here's a blast from the past. This is a Hallicrafters Porta Command PC-350, 12-Channel radio, most likely on VHF-High band. I seem to remember the local civil defense office had a few of these leftover from the 1960s.

WOW! Great picture. I only wonder who the guy at the mic was and for whom did he telecommunicate for? Inquiring minds and all...
