ENC ham exams and clubs...

well, the easiest place to start is right in your hometown !

www.onslowarc.org

Onslow Amatuer Radio Club with lists of exam sessions in newbern, morehead city and wilmington...there used to be occasional sessions in jax, too ( i was part of the first three man FCC Volunteer Examineer team here in eastern NC back in the early 1980's)....also links to exam test practice sessions online, etc...don't overlook the club meetings and breakfast to meet local hams and get first hand info and ask questions...locals will also have used gear to sell !

( you can find a used 2m radio at any hamfest for $50-100, abundant for the picking...mobile rigs and handhelds...and pick up a power supply to run the mobile in the house for around $20....add a $20 mag mount antenna for the car or ontop the file cabinet or refrigerator in the house, and you're on the air in mins for under $100 with no problems and with a ham station that is quite flexible in it's use/appications. )

if you don't make it to the meetings, go down the membership lists and call someone local or a club officer....if at first you don't succeed, try try again...

( be advised that 2m on air activity is at a low right now, as you know, the repeaters are VERY quiet most of teh time...but the hams are still around ! )

also,

www.w4ymi.com

Carteret County Amarteu Radio Society......the Morehead City based club...meetings...exam dates...membership...lots of info here too.

also,

www.nbarc.org

New Bern Amateur Radio club......the new bern area club...meetings...exam skeds...membership,etc....

those are the big three clubs locally.....and don't forget ARRL FIELD DAY on sat june 23...check each website for locations and go visit...talk...meet...operate...eat, drink and be merry !

( the local swansboro hams are doing the Onslow ARC FIELD DAY at the Bicientennial Park on the waterfront on HW24 in Swansboro in a relaxed, fun, non-competitive manner, just to put ham radio on the air in a public place )

everything above can be collected in just a few mins using GOOGLE....when in doubt, google ! :) But it's more fun going to a HAMFEST !!!!!

the exams are woefully easy now....no problem there. exams are available almost every month downeast here....and you'll find many hams happy, willing, and able to help you at any turn !

have a blast ! and enjoy a great hobby...it is what YOU make it !

re: cw testing requirement

you used exactly the right word...'requirement'...in your question !

the FCC dropped the morse code testing requirement completely....all levels of license from Tech to Extra are now code free in the exams...

But, On The Air, the CW (morse code) bands are alive and well !!
And, interestingly enough, even when you pass your code free first level Tech license, you will get CW privilidges on the shortwave (HF) bands !!! So, learn and operate CW, cause you have more band space allocated to you for the CW mode on more bands than you have with Voice modes with the entry Tech license !! The Tech license gets you on shortwave (HF) voice in ONLY the 10 meter band...28.300 Mhz to 28.500 Mhz. The Tech license also gets CW/RTTY/DATA bandspace in the 15 meter, 40 meter and 80 meter bands !!!! Thats 24 hour a day comms worldwide on those CW freqs !

Of course, all the normal VHF and UHF voice bands come with the entry level Tech license still...6m, 2m, 220Mhz, 440 Mhz, etc etc.

There's a TON of freqs and modes to operate, all there for you to enjoy ! And with the new computer soundcard decoder programs and interfaces, you can operate any of the new digital modes--or the older ones like CW or RTTY--right from the keyboard on your PC !!

You can find lots of older HF transceivers with all the bands and modes (including complete shortwave SWL coverage receivers built in) in the $200 to $300 range at any hamfest....a nice deal even if you only plan to operate on 2m right now...you can still listen before you upgrade and you can ALWAYS listen to the SWL freqs !!! Listening to the non-ham shortwave bands is even more fun than ham radio !!! ( yes, i'm still a SWL at heart--HI HI !)

So, jump in...the waters great !

( And, yes, the CW testing "requirement" has been dropped .....guess i strayed from the original question...sorry ! )

lol, thanks!, any idea on the cost for the test?
In most places it's $14

This is a good place to take practice tests. There are other places too, try a few and see which one feels right for you.
