I'm not sure where/what classes are available in the area, but you don't actually need to take any class at all. You can just read through the book yourself and go take the test.

There are several clubs and organizations that sponsor one-day courses around the country. I know I have received emails from some of these organizations advertising their classes. Here are some links I just found on Google with info that you can check out. Also, you might try to contact a local ham club in your area as many offer classes..

HamTestOnline™ - Ham Radio Exam Courses and Ham Radio Practice Exams

Good luck! Getting a ham license is NOT rocket science. Many of us learned and upgraded by simply studying the plethora of books and on-line info that is “out there”.

Get the ARRL book "Now you're talking" read that, do the practice questions and then when you feel you're ready take the test.

Get the ARRL book titled "Ham Radio License Manual". That is the current book. Its dated 2010, the exam questions were updated in 2010 and are current until 2014. You can order it directly from ARRL or any ham radio store online.

As far as locating a class, look on ARRL's website at American Radio Relay League | ARRL - The national association for AMATEUR RADIO. From there, you can look for upcoming classes. Classes are taught both over several weeks or over a weekend.

You can also locate local clubs in your area on ARRL's website. They can certainly point you in the right direction for a class and/or exams. A club is also a great resource for elmering (mentoring) as you become more involved in amateur radio.

Good luck.

will the ARRL, c2010. 2nd ed work or do i need to go get the 2012 one?

thanks,
matt

I believe that the question pool has changed. There are a number of web sites that offer test questions and answers. You might be better off working with one of them.

My wife picked up a study guide and spent about an hour a day working with it. In about a month she went and took the test and passed her Technician exam. Find one of the radio clubs in your area and one of them should have a testing session now and then. If not, they should be able to point you in the right direction to find someplace that is giving the exams.

Matt,

You want the 2010 edition of "Ham Radio License Manual" or Gordon West's book for Technican class. The question pool has NOT changed for Technicain class since 2010. It did change this year for Extra class only.

But the test in WI would yield a "9" call (WAS regions), you have any preferences. QRZ.com has some good practice tests. I reccomemd using them or a similar website. Good luck! Let us know when you get your call.

Just for testing in 9 land does not mean you will get a 9 land call. We have tested many people from MN and they have all obtained 0 calls. This has been in place for awhile as the call assignment goes by your physical address.

When I first obtained my call in 1993 I took it in Duluth, MN (which is 0 land) but since I lived in WI I was granted a 9 call.

Furthermore, with vanity callsigns these days it really does not make a difference anymore anyways. Be assured if you test at our test session in WI you will not automatically be issued a 9 call.

The club you're with doesnt? If you've been essentially operating for a year you should have a good base for the test already.

What kind of club then? If you're looking for a class try contacting some of the clubs in the area. If they dont have any they could probably point you in the right direction.
