• Effective immediately we will be deleting, without notice, any negative threads or posts that deal with the use of encryption and streaming of scanner audio.

We've noticed a huge increase in rants and negative posts that revolve around agencies going to encryption due to the broadcasting of scanner audio on the internet. It's now worn out and continues to be the same recycled rants. These rants hijack the threads and derail the conversation. They no longer have a place anywhere on this forum other than in the designated threads in the Rants forum in the Tavern.

If you violate these guidelines your post will be deleted without notice and an infraction will be issued. We are not against discussion of this issue. You just need to do it in the right place. For example:

Well it's now 12:38AM Pacific time so the New Year is upon me at least here in Las Vegas. I went out just a few minutes before midnight to catch the fireworks as I've done for the past decade since I returned and I have to say I was pretty disappointed compared to years past. When it got to the last minute of the 8+ minute show I was expecting that all out "hell breaking loose" extravaganza that normally happens and... well, this year it just didn't sadly, not a great way to ring in a new year in my opinion.

Also they cut the show in half it seems because in the past they would be using about 10-13 casino rooftops along the Strip as the bases of operations where they'd be shooting off the fireworks (that includes the Stratosphere Tower as well) and this year it was reported they'd only have 6 involved total. Typically I'd be able to hear them after the requisite amount of time passing for the shock wave of the explosions to reach the downtown area (where it would reverberate off many of the buildings for a big echo effect) and this year - perhaps because of the roughly 50% reduction in the overall amount of ordinance used - I barely heard a thing. :(

Anyway, I hope 2017 is a better year for all of us and I wish all of you and your families and friends well in your endeavors. Make the best of it while you can. ;)

What I was referring to was that the LVMPD here has several TGIDs set up specifically for use with NYE operations and in the past we here in the Las Vegas area could listen in on several aspects of it including the "official countdown" provided by the people in charge of the fireworks show itself. Now that those TGIDs are encrypted in the LVMPD P25 Phase II system we're not able to monitor them anymore - I have some friends that work in the fireworks industry and they confirmed what you said about the encryption for use with their own private radio comms but I had some inkling of that in 2015 ahead of time.

There used to be some TGIDs on our S.N.A.C.C. system related to the fire departments as well that were something we could monitor on NYE for obvious reasons but those too appear to be now either entirely deprecated or moved over to the LVMPD side of things, I don't know for certain.

Still, it was fun in the past to be able to know exactly when the first ordinance would be launching off the Stratosphere so I could tell the other residents in my apartment building when to get ready to start recording from their smartphones/etc.

Damned encryption, ruining all our fun. :D

(YES THAT WAS SOME LEVEL OF SARCASM AND NOT A PERSONAL COMMENT ON THE ENCRYPTION DEBATE SO TAKE IT AS SUCH)
