• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Has anybody re-cased a G5?

The G5 took a drop with the radio surviving fine, but the mount for the belt clip didn't. I'm going to try a repair with J.B. Weld, but I'm not at all optimistic.

Has anyone re-cased a G5 themselves? I'm wondering how complicated the process might be. I've re-cased some 2-way radios and I know complexity levels can vary.

Has anyone had Unication perform a re-case? If so, can you provide an approximate cost and turnaround time?

Thanks.

You won't be able to recase a G5 yourself. Unication does not make the parts available. They are a warranty/in house repair only.

Are you under warranty? Do you have a dealer? If so, talk to your dealer to have a repair ticket opened.

If you don't have a dealer or aren't sure if you are under warranty or not, feel free to use the form on my website and we will look into the pager's status for you and help you with the RMA process. www.eastcoastpagers.com/repairs

Thanks for the reply. I DO have a dealer and I'm NOT under warranty. I DO appreciate your willingness to assist, however. I truly do.

Might you have an idea of the cost of a re-case job?

I am not sure if this is supposed to be shared on a public forum so I will PM you the details.

Unication replaced my G5 case a few years ago. It was still under warranty. I had to send it in for (which at the time it was a paid upgrade) for a firmware update. I asked them to replace my buttons and case and I said that i would pay for for that service.
This was arranged through my dealer (Wolfe Communications).
Unication replaced my case (which was the older version without he slightly elevated plastic button protectors) with the current version and my antenna and battery at no charge. The battery was also part of the recall for the older LiPoly).
If I remember correctly it was about 10 days including shipping both ways from California to Texas.

Sounds like an all-around good experience. Unfortunately, this is my personal unit and it is out of warranty. My dealer quoted a flat repair fee of $220 to re-case the G5. That's a bit steep. I think I'll just start using the nylon case I bought a couple of years ago and threw in the drawer. I bet that case is still in there SOMEWHERE! <grin>
