This scanner sucks period! It took an act of congress to get it to work properly on the Summit tower but it finally did. I had found a buyer for it in Watertown so I programmed the frequencies for the Watertown area then when I go to demo it I could not get it to work. It will lock on a TGID and the led will light up but it won't generate any good audio all I hear is a little hiss. I take the scanner back home and plug it in and it works on the Summit tower.

Other than that the audio sounds like crap.
When it was in my van it just out of the blue lost all of its programming.

It is junk and a waste of money. Anyone want to buy it for $299?

Sounds like you dont really know how to fully utilize all the features of the 197...

It happens to be one of the best scanners on the market. Maybe you wernt close enough to the towers to decode the digital when you were attempting to demo it. Also, NO scanner just randomly looses its programming.

Do some reading on what each button and function does, because you most likely erased the memory yourself.

:)

Dont hate on the 197, just do some research. Educate yourself instead of talking smack.

Also, FOR SALE ads go in that section ;)

You'd have more luck getting rid of it there.

I was less than 3 miles away from the local tower and I know plenty about radios and scanners. And yes it did just randomly loose it's programming because I didn't touch anything. Can you please tell me which button is the erase all button so that I can avoid it in the future.

The Object Oriented 197 can take some time getting used to, and to get everything in working order. It is very advanced, and can even deter those who know everything about radios sometimes. Once you know how it works, it is a very nice system to have.

Don't look for a career in marketing

Very interesting marketing plan, rant about how trerrible the unit is and how it won't pick up nearby sites and randomly dumps it's programming then pitch a price 30 bucks less than a new one! Good luck!
I think my 197 rocks!

I'm *****ing because it sounds like crap and out of the blue it dumped its programming. The audio is high pitched and has lots of noise compared to my Uniden. I was very optimistic due to all of the posts that I read about people that "loved" their RS/GRE scanners but my experience has not been the same.

Then you have a defective scanner, so return it for a refund.

As rdale said, this might just be the case, because, as you said, everyone seems to LOVE these scanners.

Go to ratshack and swap it out. It you need any help reprograming it or have questions on the features hit me with a message, I'm happy to help ya.

Or, if you lost your desire to work with the 197 after all the trouble, get yourself a refund.

Still - - At the end of the day I think its a top model so if it's really giving you that much trouble something isnt right. Hope you get it figured out man.

Let me till you what I think he did::::: He programmed a VHF freq which can overload the frontend unless you ATT the strond signal. Then he powered it ON or OFF with the switch ON. Either in the car on from AC supply. You have to turn scanner OFF before doing power connections. This will cause it to lose memory. Just rookie mistakes. People that PGM by had always complain because thay cant see what they are doing. I love my 197 and 106. Good Luck to All.

I apply and remove power to my PRO-197 both in my car, and in the house from a switched power strip without ever turning off the scanner. I've been doing this for a long time and it never once caused a loss of memory.

You are half right, I was leaving the scanner pwr switch on while operating the ignition which may have led to the loss of memory but at least one person on here has not experience this problem. However, I have not been programming by hand. I have been using Win500 and PSREdit500 to set it u.

You could try switching it out at RS, returning it if it is defective, or just erase EVERYTHING, starting from scratch, and seeing what you get.

Would u like a win 500 file for NE SD to load into your 197 ??

I got a file from guitarbrian and got my scanner working on the Summit tower so I thought I was good to go and only needed to add the control channels for Watertown but that didn't work. I just added an identical trunking system with the appropriate frequency. I can see it stop scanning and land on a Talkgroup but there is never any audio. Sure, I would like to see what you have for a file to compare all my settings. I will send pm with my email.
