These are my "local guys" just about 20 miles south of me. I did see them as "Frozen" on ADS-B, but THANK YOU for the post! Nice to see "somebody else" caught them too. I caught (at least) one of them inbound to Christchurch, NZ the next night (last night) (Returning from Antarctica?). Have always wanted to find them on HF or SATCOM, but in today's world, it's all (probably) done via cellphone. All freqs I'm aware of are below. I hear them locally on 251.25 (here in Eastern New York State) quite often calling in their codes (with SKIER OPS) after a local flying training mission. See Inbound (screen shot) to Christchurch below from Jan 10th, 2023 & THANKS!

"SKIER" = Local Flight Training & Ops Callsign
"FROZEN" = Enroute Antarctica callsign from Christchurch, NZ - used 1/9/23
"NORTH" = Enroute/Inbound Christchurch, NZ callsign used 1/10/23 (Return from Antarctica? Or just "inbound" to NZ?)

The wing's mission is to provide airlift support to the National Science Foundation's South Pole research program by flying LC-130H Hercules airlifters, modified with wheel-ski gear, in support of Arctic and Antarctic operations. The 109th Airlift Wing is the only unit in the world to fly these aircraft. Along with the NSF mission, the 109th Airlift Wing also supported Operation Enduring Freedom. In addition to its combat airlift mission, particularly when placed in a Federalized status, the wing also provides domestic-related functions commonly associated with Air National Guard units, such as disaster or hurricane relief.

As my Pappy use'ta say... "Awe, Stop Funin' Me now, Son".
He "just" changed his callsign to NORTH19 from FROZEN20. Hunh?
It's GOTTA BE the same a/c? Decending now to 15,000 ft inbound Christchurch, NZ...
IT IS the same aircraft. His Registration matches. FROZEN20 "is now" NORTH19. Go figure.

What used to be:

Now that was a real pleasure to listen to. A "very clean" recording. THANK YOU. I can finally say I heard my "local boys" on SATCOM. Thanks to a guy in Australia. The internet sure does make the world a whole lot smaller, eh? A file worth saving (and sharing) for posterity. Thanks for sharing it.

"ICE32 w/MAC CENTER" getting the WX for Phoenix Airfield
.

That's what I was talking about hearing. Now it's all encrypted, hunh? Which makes that recording even more valuable. What a shame.

I would "guess" Antarctic Operations has a discrete HF freq, be it Schenectady, NY or Christchurch or Antarctica. I was just looking at some old HF freqs and found the Rescue Wing from Long Island (HC-130/MH-60) from 20 years ago using: 6.714 & 4.421 usb for RESCUE OPS. So, there "probably is/was" an HF discrete freq for the ICE pack, the question is, "Does anybody still USE HF?" with today's technology available. Any input from anyone?

Thanks again "Victor Kilo 3 Romeo Xray" that was kind of you. I certainly appreciate hearing that recording. Another bucket item checked off.

*This is the same aircraft that Kiniutech started this thread with as FROZN20 (Tail Reg & Transponder Codes match). Looks like it's gonna be a long winter for these guys (its summer now in New Zealand is it?).

5:31pm Thursday Eastern time 1/12/23 (11:31am Friday 1/13/23 = New Zealand time)
FROZEN21 (Reg: 83-0490) (hex id: AE060D) Depart Christchurch, NZ enroute Antarctica (due south).

5:42pm 1/12/23 (Tail Reg: 83-0491) (Hex Id: AE060E) "FROZN22" in trail now behind "FROZN21" = LC-130 109th AW NY ANG

*A BIG THANK YOU TO DAMIEN (VK3RX) FOR THE MP3 AUDIO FILE (ABOVE) & BELOW IN THIS THREAD.
EXTREMELY NICE OF YOU to take the time to do. I can "now say" I FINALLY HEARD THEM on SATCOM! WOW.
That sounds funny I know, but I see these guys fly low level over my house ALL THE TIME and say....
"ONE DAY" I'll find them and hear them on SATCOM or HF. NOW I can say I've heard them on SATCOM &
THANK YOU SO MUCH for the HF freq! I will try that one for sure. ("God knows I'm Good").

My pleasure :)

On the journey down and back NZ <> Antarctica they use aero HF 9032 USB in between VHF range of either. Both NZ and SOUTH POLE have that. Reception is patchy here on 9032 due to the flights being conducted during local daylight hours, but being night there you might do better. They tend to (or at least used to) depart NZ around 2100 UTC and Antarctica around 0400 UTC, probably in the middle of your night so not convenient for listening :)

A couple more SATCOM clips from the day:

*Thanks Kiniutech! And Damien for all your input. I've learned A LOT.

I forgot all about the NY ANG LC-130H OPs at Thule AB, Greenland AND I found an old collection of freqs I had from 1999 and THERE is the SATCOM freqs (confirmed) (are these the downlink freqs you heard them on?). Also a nice YouTube video of the LC-130Hs at Thule at end. "I had" some Thule AB "contact OPS" freqs (somewhere). They used an "odd ball" name for that ops and it took me forever to figure out the frequency IDs were for Thule AB and NOT for local New York. But I've lost that note now. Also lost any HF freqs for aircraft inbound Thule as well. I'm building all this over again. Those recordings were fantastic. Much appreciated. best, lar

=======================================

MAC CENTER (McMurdo ATC) (also referred to as: NZCM FSS)
Callsign: NZCM_FSS ("MAC CENTER")
Primary Frequency (HF): HF 9032 KHz (VHF 128.700 MHz) - (11256 provided as secondary HF contact)
McMurdo Area Frequency (VHF): VHF 118.200 MHz
RTF Designator: "Mac Center"
Telephone Designator: "Mac Center"

McMurdo ATC provides Enroute/Oceanic Air Traffic Control, flight following, Non-Radar Approach Control, VFR Control Tower services and Search and Rescue coordination. These services are provided for aircraft operating south of 60° South latitude in the McMurdo Sector and USAP flights operating over the Antarctic Continent. Other Antarctic ATC agencies may assist Mac Center in providing these services.

Mac Center coordinates with Auckland Radio for flights between Antarctica and New Zealand and Brisbane Radio for flights between Antarctica and Australia. Within the McMurdo Sector, applicable to all aircraft, aircraft coming from New Zealand, Australia etc, will begin on the HF frequency and as they get closer to Antarctica, will be transferred to the VHF frequency 118.2. Mac Center is controlled in the real world by American Military Controllers, controllers from VATNZ should be aware of the different classes of airspace and what they mean.

MAC CENTER communications contact detail:

VATNZ ATC Sector Map:

Which Controller do I call for a clearance? Sometimes there is no local aerodrome controller online, particulary at some New Zealand provincial airports. Frequently there are Centre, or what we term Area Controllers online controlling large areas of airspace. So when this occurs who is the best controller to call for a clearance? The diagram below shows the airspace covered by each Centre Controller. Some things to note are:

1) NZAA automatically extends to cover NZCH-B when NZCH-B is not online
2) NZCH-T automatically extends to cover NZOH when NZOH is not online
3) If one sector is not online an adjacent sector may provide ATC however this is not always the case and is up to the individual controller at the time.

As of 2020, the Thule Remote Tracking Station (TTS) is a "U.S. Space Force" installation in Greenland, having a Remote Tracking Station (callsign for the Polar Orbiting Geophysical Observatory is: "POGO") of the Satellite Control Network. As of 2010, PAX Airlines: Air Greenland, CARGO (shipping): Ocean Transportation is provided by Schuyler Line Navigation Company, a US Flag Ocean Carrier. Schuyler Line operates under government contract to supply sustainment and building supplies to the Base. Besides Canadian Fighters & Transports, the National Science Foundation maintains a presence there as well utilizing the NY ANG LC-130H aircraft to support them and their "remote outpost" missons.

Really Nice (2021) Video featuring the 109th AW NY ANG LC-130H at Thule AB, Greenland.
See them land these birds "on snow skis":
