To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello! I am having a issue with a Kenwood TK-250 transmitting. It worked fine last time I used it, probably a year ago, and now its not doing much of anything when I push the PTT button. When you push the transmit button, the red LED flashes once, screen goes blank and comes right back immediately. Not sure why its now doing this. The battery is fully charged. I have looked through the programming software and cannot find anything that would be associated with this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

This sounds to me like the battery has had it. They can indicate "fully charged" but in actually they are not capable of holding much of anything after a point.

That was my first thought as well but I can set it to scan and it will run for several hours no problem. Just trying to figure out if getting a new battery would be worth it. Thanks for the reply.

Several hours on scan sounds about right. The transmitter really loads down the battery, even at low power.

Your battery is shot. Time to replace it.

Yep, as the others said.
Receiving/scanning uses minimal power. When you try to transmit, it pulls a few amps and the battery tanks. You need to replace the battery with a new one.

Any suggestions for a better antenna? I'm still using the OEM rubber duck and some signals have a lot of static even though their pretty close.

Get your radio aligned. A 6-8” helical is about as good as it gets for VHF, unless you buy a ham whacker antenna.
