Soo.. no idea what I'm doing with this thing.

My girlfriend's grandfather just bought a (Grecom, I think) PSR-600 Digital Trunking Scanner. I have no idea how to work it, the manual is a little convoluted for me - but he expects me to know how to program it as he wants.

I've looked at the Wiki and FAQ and stuff - but in all honesty I just have no idea where to start.

Can anyone help out?
He wants to listen to Aircraft(Control Tower, Plane-to-Plane, etc) and the Police bands(I believe city and state police)

Livin' in Indianapolis, Indiana, Marion County.

Many thanks for your time.

SLOWWWWLY,read the instruction book as there is a lot to learn about your beast! :)
I have the radio shack version of the exact same unit, but I'm a lousy teacher. I will say that if you have little to no experience with this kind of equipment then you may want to search out some help from GRE or a local ham. Otherwise you are going to be up to your eyeballs in a very nice radio without a clue.
There are boatloads of people here on radio ref. that can make that thing do dishes for you,as well as make your girl's grand dad happy! ;)

Welcome, Theral. The 600 will be a great scanner to monitor the Indiana SAFE-T system. A little newbie info on aircraft, unless you live within a couple of miles of the tower and have an outside antenna, you will only hear the aircraft talking to the tower. It's just the way it is set up. Plane to plane will be easier, but he will need more than the rubber duck that came with the radio such as the Diamond, SH77CA, will greatly increase the reception. Most important, get a premium subscription to radio reference and download this software: Software for RadioShack PRO-series (PRO-92, 93, 95, 96, 97, 99, 163, 164, 106, 197) and GRE PSR-series (PSR-500, 600, 300, 400) scanners It will allow you to import what your girlfriends grandfather wants to listen to on the scanner. Some other info on the scanner, it has 20 scan lists (not banks even though they can be set up that way). 1800+ object oriented memories that can be placed in any of the 20 scan lists. This allows for a lot of scanning:)

The county and cities are on the MECA system. I would post in the Indiana state forum so that maybe you could meet up with someone close by to assist you in understanding the scanner. This is not a scanner that "your grandfather used":D Just a little pun so that you know it requires more to entering the frequencies than pushing PGM, the frequency, and enter to get it to scan. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm not sure if he'll want to subscribe to anything, but I'll talk to him about it.

I've been through the manual a few times(The one that came with it) and it was very confusing to me. The one that was on the disc that came with it was a bit better, but honestly I'm really out of my element.

One question about the V-Sync(I believe that's what it was called) the loading of the Preprogrammed folders.

I went into this part, hit cancel, then turned the system off and back on - and now the 'scan' part is acting funny. It won't pick up the police anymore, it cycles through EMS and that's it.

If anyone knows any "For Dummies" guides or anything, I'd greatly appreciate it.
