I have been a Hammie for roughly a few years now and i wanted to start getting my base station up and running
I was Looking into getting a 757 gx or a 767---A friend of mine had one along time ago and loved it..All Mode and Multi Band---My question is im not sure if there is a tone board installed from the factory or do i have to purchase one from the yeasu corp and at what price they go for

I have been looking around E-Bay and there seems to be a Few around for sale

My Question to the Community for advice is should i spend the time on the 757/767 models or go with something close to it....im actually looking to spend not more than 400.00 dollars with all the Tone boards installed

I Want to thank all Who Reply to my Thread

I love my FT-767gx. I've used it from listening to longwave all the way up to working 2 meter SSB/CW/FM.

Makes a great ham rig as well as using it for shortwave.

Audio reports are excellent, and makes a great way to get on 6 meters as well.

You will not be disappointed no matter what bands you operate.

Not sure why you need a "tone board" in a Yaesu FT-757GX. That rig only covers 160 through 10 meters. Are you planning to use it to work 10m FM repeaters?

The Yaesu FT-767GX could accept optional 2m and 70cm band modules, but the FT-757 series could not. Those band modules were only rated for 10 watts output.

Keep in mind that we are talking about radios that were discontinued 20 years ago or more. While they may be affordable on initial purchase, you may have trouble finding parts and service for them. If it were me, I'd look for something newer.

You won't be able to use an FT-757 series for 2m or 70cm as that radio does not have that capability without the use of external transverters. While the FT-767GX does have 2m and 70cm, the FT-757 and FT-767 are completely different radios with different chassis.

I agree that an Icom IC-706 MkII G would be a good choice. While all-in-one radios are attractive, they have some disadvantages. Namely, if the HF or VHF-UHF portion of the radio fails and you have to get it serviced, you are completely off the air. And, unless there is a lot of 2m SSB or CW activity in your area, buying a radio with 2m all-mode capability may not be money well spent. You may be able to meet your needs and you would have more flexibility if you shopped for a good starter HF rig and a VHF-UHF FM mobile.

If you're only going to be on 2 and 440 FM, then save your money and pick another radio other than the 767gx. You'd never use 90% of that radio's capabilities. FWIW, I believe the tone board is the FTS-8 and available on ebay from time to time.

To the best of my knowledge, there are currently no 2m/70cm FM base radios available from any manufacturer. For that matter, I can't think of any 2m/70cm all-mode base radios that are currently available new. The market for this type of radio is very small. Most people who want a 2m/70cm radio at home buy a mobile radio and run it from a power supply.

The only radios currently available that have HF, 6m, 2m, and 70cm all in one box are the Icom IC-7000, which is a mobile rig, the Icom IC-9100, which is probably way out of your price range, the Yaesu FT-857, which is a mobile, and the Yaesu FT-897, which is a larger than a typical mobile. Discontinued radios that have that coverage include the Icom IC-706MkII G, which is a mobile, the Yaesu FT-847, which is a small base rig, the Yaesu FT-100, which is a mobile, and the Yaesu FT-767GX, which is a base rig. Any of the newer radios are very menu driven which may provide you with some operating frustrations.

You say you want to use 2m/70cm repeaters. That tells me you want a 2m/70cm FM radio. The ability to do SSB or CW on those bands is probably not required.

You say you want to "do the skip talk". That tells me you want a radio that will do SSB on the HF bands.

You say you want to do all this for $400. Well, that really limits your choices, even in the used market.

Given what you've told us, I still think a 2m/70cm dual-band FM mobile plus an older, entry-level HF base radio is your best choice. I think I'd start out with the 2m/70cm radio and look for the HF radio when you can get some more money together.
